Spintires is an off-road driving simulator from the British development team Oovee Game Studios . The game was released on June 13, 2014 via Steam and is available as a retail DVD in various EU member states.

Gameplay

The game starts at a garage with one or more vehicles parked in front of it. Vehicles can be refueled, repaired and equipped in a garage. The map selected before the start of the game can be freely explored with a vehicle. There are other workshops, timber loading stations, sawmills and places where other vehicles can be activated at various points on the map. The aim is to reveal the entire map, unlock all vehicles and complete tasks (deliveries of wood to the sawmill). The game can also be played in multiplayer mode.

Technical implementation

Spintires uses a Havok physics engine . The ground in the game gives way in soft spots and can become knee-deep mud in which trucks can quickly get stuck. Some vehicles have four-wheel drive , which makes it easier to drive through such passages, and a differential lock , which prevents speed differences between the driven wheels. The torque is different for all vehicles, and especially in vehicles with gasoline engines, it is noticeably lower. In order to still be able to drive through the often impassable terrain, there are four gear selection levels in the transmission: reverse , creep gear , forward and automatic . If the gear is engaged too high, the engine will stall; if the vehicle is driven too fast, the vehicles will rock up quickly. The payload is decisive for the driving behavior. A fully loaded truck overturns much faster, slides off slopes faster and sinks deeper into the mud. When driving through water, the fording depth plays an important role as the engine can suck in water and then be damaged. The game's damage model is very detailed, as is the entire game in general. All trees can be knocked down or used to free yourself from mud with the winch. Stones and rubble can cause vehicles to slide quickly and sometimes become wedged between the tires. The water has a noticeable current that influences the passage of rivers.

development

Oovee Game Studios started a Kickstarter campaign on May 15, 2013 , which they successfully completed on June 13, 2013 and raised nearly £ 61,000 . The game was presented on Steam Greenlight six months later and finally released on Steam in January 2014. Spintires quickly developed into an insider tip , which even took first place in the sales chart on Steam for a short time and then stayed in the top 10. In December 2014, 100,000 copies were already sold.

The developer Pavel Zagrebelnyj and the publisher Oovee caused negative headlines several times, for example in 2014 when Zagrebelnyj accused Oovee of embezzling money and excluding him from the development process. Oovee, however, denied the allegations, stating that the developer was paid in full and there was no breach of contract on either side. Both sides later stated that "communication problems" had led to the misery. In March 2016, there were again allegations on the part of Zagrebelnyj, who accused Oovee of still owing him money. A bug that occurred during the same period , which led to crashes and made the game unplayable, led the press and fans to suspect that a "time bomb" by developer Zagrebelnyj had been implemented in the game to exert pressure. The game was therefore temporarily banned from purchase by Steam. Both Zagrebelnyj and Oovee later denied the allegations.

Mods

A variety of free mods are available for Spintires , such as a wide range of different vehicles. The content created by fans can be loaded into the game and, in the case of modded vehicles, can also be controlled in the game. The developer studio Oovee Game Studios provides the mods themselves via its own forum. They can also be downloaded from the Steam Workshop.

reception

The game was recorded mixed. It is rated very positive on Steam , as 87% of reviewers gave it a positive rating. The good physics engine and the detailed graphics are particularly praised. Chip Online's Michael Humpa called the game convincing and the game's graphics good . According to Dem Westen, the vehicles are designed with great attention to detail.

Games-MAG rated Spintires negatively. This truck simulation is not recommended for anyone.

In 2017, Spintires: MudRunner appeared, a sequel to the game.
