The municipal high school Kamen is a high school in Kamen in the eastern Ruhr area . The school is currently attended by almost 1,000 students who are taught by over 80 teachers .
history
There was a Latin school in Kamen as early as 1586. Pastor Anton Praetorius was the rector at that time .
The Kamener Gymnasium was founded as a rectorate school on October 1st, 1858 , making it the first municipal higher education institution in Kamen. In 2008 the school celebrated its 150th anniversary.
The high school is committed to combating bullying . There are counselors , mediators and a school psychologist . In 2014 the school is to be named a school without racism - school with courage .
The upper level now has around 450 students (as of May 2014).
Lessons offered
The grammar school has a modern language focus . In addition to German and English , French and Latin as well as Spanish and Russian are offered as basic courses in the upper level.
In addition to Protestant and Catholic religious instruction, practical philosophy or philosophy is offered as a substitute subject .
There is a cooperation with the comprehensive school Kamen with the possibility of attending advanced courses there and vice versa.
Every year there is a student exchange with France , at irregular intervals with Russia and Turkey . There was also another exchange of Israel.
Working groups

- In the musical or artistic field: two school choirs , school orchestra , instrumental music , keyboard , theater
In qualification phase 1 , an instrumental and vocal practical course, as well as literature, film, theater or writing workshops are offered. All can be chosen as a one-year basic course.
The Schulgarten-AG maintains the largest school garden in North Rhine-Westphalia , in which, in addition to rare plants, fruit and vegetables are grown.
Since 1980 there has been a glider club at the nearby glider airfield in Kamen-Derne in cooperation with the Luftsportfreunde Kamen / Dortmund .
In 2013, some students founded a lesbian and lesbian gay community that tries to minimize homophobia and offers help to bullied students.
Since 2017 there has also been a Fairtrade AG that plan and carry out campaigns so that the high school can be a Fairtrade school.
Since 2020, the grammar school has also founded the school medical service in order to be able to provide first aid to injured students.
successes
In the sporting field, high school students were successful in various sports such as football , handball, judo , chess and tennis . One reason for this is the Kaiserau sports school based in Kamen , the Westphalia Football and Athletics Association and the Westphalian Tennis Association (WTV), which has set up a training base in Kamen.
The former school band Binki says boo! gained greater notoriety through her participation in the casting show X Factor .
