description
Vegetative characteristics
The ground tragacanth grows as a deciduous, perennial herbaceous plant and reaches heights of 3 to 10 centimeters. Both the very short stem and the leaves are hairy in a densely spaced manner. The leaves are heaped in rosettes at the base of the stem. The foliage leaves , arranged in a basal rosette, are pinnate with 12 to 19 pairs of pinnate leaflets and have distinct end leaflets . The stipules are quite long and connected to the petiole.
Generative characteristics
The inflorescence usually has three to nine, sometimes up to twelve flowers. The hermaphrodite flowers are zygomorphic and five-fold with a double flower envelope . The five petals are light yellow. The almost sessile legumes are egg-shaped, puffy and densely shaggy with a length of 1.5 to 2 centimeters.
Chromosome number
The number of chromosomes is 2n = 16.
ecology
The blooming time of this hemicryptophyte extends in Central Europe from May to July , sometimes to September .
Occurrence and endangerment
The distribution area of the soil tragacanth lies in Central Europe , Southeast Europe , Eastern Europe and Turkey . In the German-speaking area, soil tragacanth occurs in Germany , Austria , Switzerland and South Tyrol .
In Austria, the very rare occurrences are only known from the Pannonian area of the federal states of Lower Austria and Burgenland . The lime-loving species prefers dry grassland in the colline altitude range . In Austria the soil tragacanth is considered to be threatened with extinction. In Central Europe, the species occurs in companies of the Festucion valesiacae association, also in Pinus sylvestris companies; supraregional it is a class character of the pine steppe forests (Pulsatillo-Pinetea).
