St. Magnus Church in Sande

The St. Magnus Church is an Evangelical Lutheran church in the municipality of Sande in the district of Friesland . The church, built in 1351 on an artificial terp , is the oldest building in Sande.

location

The church, consecrated to St. Magnus , is located on the main street of Sande, right next to the newly created, centrally located market square. The church building is surrounded by the old cemetery.

history

Today's St. Magnus Church had two previous buildings. The first church was around 1176 during the clashes between the clans of Rüstringen and Östringen destroyed. The church built after this is said to have been around 150 years old and then became so dilapidated that today's church was built as the third church building.

The bell tower next to the church was built much later and is dated to the end of the 16th century. It is around 30 meters high and houses three bronze bells from 1522, 1664 and 1756.

The Reformation from the Catholic to the Evangelical Lutheran faith passed off peacefully in Sands. The first Protestant preacher in Sande is mentioned in a document from 1531.

The church survived the Second World War without any significant damage. In 1991 the church was carefully renovated and in 2001 it celebrated its 650th birthday.

architecture

Walled up hagioscope of St. Magnus Church

The Sander Church was built as a small hall church with an apse . The oldest parts are of Romanesque origin, the nave is to be attributed to Gothic influences. On the eastern edge of the south wall there is a hagioscope that is now walled up . The predominantly baroque interior is from the 17th century.

Furnishing

The altar , the pulpit and the baptismal font are works from the heyday of the Baroque and were donated by the Kerker family.

Baptismal font

The baptismal font was created in 1647 by an unknown Danish artist. The basin has an octagonal shape and stands on four S-shaped feet. There is a copper bowl inside the baptismal font. The dome of the baptismal font is supported by eight brackets, curved in an S shape, which converge in the middle to form a knob. In earlier times, a cord was attached to it, with which the hood could be pulled up. Due to this device, the baptismal font was tied to its location. Today the location of the baptismal font in the apse can be freely changed, as this device no longer exists. The basin is inscribed in Latin :

"Hoc baptesterio donarunt ecclesiam anno 1647 Sophie Kerkers et Elisabeth Hillers."

- "This baptismal font was given to the church by Sophie Kerkers and Elisabeth Hillers in 1647."

organ

The original organ of St. Magnus Church was probably built in 1688 by Joachim Kayser with six registers. In 1886 the organ builder Johann Martin Schmid from Oldenburg replaced this work with a new building. Schmid's instrument was two-manual with ten registers and pedal , manual and pedal coupler. In 1917 the prospect pipes were removed by the Schmid company and replaced in 1922 by prospect pipes made of aluminized zinc. In 1959 the organ was renovated by the Alfred Führer company from neighboring Wilhelmshaven . The arrangement of the organ was changed to its current state.

In 2012 the organ was renovated again by the organ building company Wurm from Neustadtgödens . The 20,000 EUR required for this could be raised through various donations.
