As the only Protestant church in the region, it was visited by Protestants from the region up to the Rhön . At the same time as the first church was built, Windheim became its own parish.

In the course of the Counter Reformation , Windheim returned to the Catholic parish of Diebach on August 28, 1628 and to the first parish of Wolfmünster in 1687. The Protestant church was replaced by a new building designed by the master builder Johann Christoph Kleinholz in 1765/66 by the Würzburg Juliusspital .

In 1811 Windheim was promoted to a curate and in 1848 again to a - this time a Catholic - parish.
