St. Blaise in Bellamont

St. Blasius is a Roman Catholic parish church in Bellamont , a suburb of Steinhausen an der Rottum , built between 1719 and 1725 under Abbot Beda Werner . It is located in the St. Benedikt pastoral care unit in Ochsenhausen in the Biberach district in Upper Swabia . In the simple and inconspicuous village church, located off the beaten track, there are works from the Memmingen workshop of Ivo Strigel and the Ulm sculptor Nikolaus Weckmann . The painting of the church is the work of the later Augsburg Imperial City Academy Director Johann Georg Bergmüller .

History and location

The church is located almost in the center of the fully disappeared, already in 1216 mentioned former castle Bella Mont , on a slightly south towards wooden pond, Hohbäumle and Tristolzer Berg sloping plateau . It is surrounded by a wall , including the cemetery and the northern funeral hall. The foundations of the castle were found when new graves were laid in the cemetery around the church. The place Bellamont is surrounded in a semicircle by the Bellamonter Rottum, which flows into the Danube .

The parish of Bellamont was first mentioned in 1258. The church was rebuilt from 1719 to 1725 under Abbot Beda Werner ; his successor Cölestin Frener completed the church after his death. The coats of arms of both abbots can therefore be seen inside the church. An inscription on the second cheek of the bench in the northern part of the church says that Auxiliary Bishop Sirgenstein von Konstanz consecrated the church. After secularization in 1807, Bellamont finally became its own parish. Since 1979 it has been pastored by the pastor of the Steinhausen an der Rottum parish.

The renovation of the church from 1973 to 1976 cost 1.2 million DM. They were raised by the parish alone, which also volunteered a total of 6,000 hours. In 1994 the interior of the tower and belfry was renovated.

Tower and bells

The church tower has a copper-coated onion dome and four sound openings. On the eaves of the bell tower , four clock faces of the church clock are embedded. There are three bells hanging in the bell tower . A bell with a relief of Blasius was cast by Johann Daniel and Johann Georg Schmelz in Biberach an der Riss in 1725 . It is translated from Latin into German in capital letters : Brought to life by Abbot Bede in honor of the Martyr Blasius, the patron of this village. Because of its artistic value, the confiscation of the bell could be averted during the Nazi era . The two delivered bells are lost and were replaced by new ones in 1976.

Furnishing

Choir room with high altar

The church is dedicated to Saint and Bishop Blasius von Sebaste . It has a single nave with a retracted choir. The outside figure in the choir arch niche is a depiction of Blasius by Johann Georg Reisch from 1725. The ceiling paintings are by Johann Georg Bergmüller . In the front the four great Latin Doctors of the Church, Ambrosius , Hieronymus , Augustine and Gregory are shown. The rear stucco ceiling fresco in the middle shows a scene from the legend of the church patron Blasius. The front fresco shows Abbot Cölestin Frener and his confreres, praying for heavenly protection for the monastery and parish church of Bellamont. Above the choir arch is the coat of arms of Abbot Beda, a silver pelican on a blue background. Above the high altar is the coat of arms of Abbot Cölestin from Constance . The high altar picture with the glorification of St. Blaise comes from Bergmüller, as do the four evangelist pictures in the pulpit .

Both side altar figures, the apostles Peter and Paul, as well as a Madonna figure and parts of the missing late Gothic altar of the collegiate church of St. George were created by the Ulm sculptor Niklaus Weckmann . The Madonna , created in 1470, comes from Ivo Strigel's workshop in Memmingen .

The pulpit, confessionals , the figure of Saint Sebastian and the choir arch cross were made by Johann Georg Reisch (1691–1760). Zacharias Binder from Ehingen created the figure of the evangelist Johannes on the pulpit lid , St. Michael and the angels on the confessionals around 1648 , which come from the previous church.

The church treasury includes magnificent paraments , a Baroque sun monstrance , an eternal light lamp from 1725 and a chalice from 1767 with the donor's inscription by the monk Lanfrancus Schnitzer, which was made by the Augsburg goldsmith Georg Ignaz Baur, a native of Biberach.
