history

St. Bonifatius was the eighth Catholic church that was built in the Hanover area after the Reformation. In Gehrden, too, the settlement of industrial companies and accompanying infrastructure measures had led to the growth of the Catholic population. Nevertheless, the church building plan, which Wilhelm Maxen pushed forward as pastor of the mother church of St. Godehard , met with considerable resistance and could ultimately only be implemented on the outermost edge of the place. The patronage commemorates St. Boniface as the "Apostle of the Germans".

On June 1, 1920, Gehrden became an independent parish. The expellees after the Second World War enlarged the community many times over and led to the establishment of several subsidiary communities with their own churches in the surrounding towns. On January 1, 1962, the parish of Gehrden was raised to a parish. In 1980/81 the St. Boniface Church was significantly expanded. On July 24, 2014, the St. Christophorus branch church in Holtensen was profaned . Since November 1, 2014, the St. Barbara Church in Barsinghausen has also been part of the parish of St. Bonifatius.
