The Church of St. Bonifatius is the Roman Catholic parish church of Bad Wildbad in Baden-Württemberg . Located on the edge of the spa park, it forms the architectural end of the Enz facilities .

history

In the traditionally Protestant Bad Wildbad, the Catholic Church and the English Church came into being because of the bathers who visited the spa in the 19th century and who were looking for a church home during their stay. King Wilhelm I had decreed that “the permanent presence of a Catholic clergyman during the summer months must be provided at public expense.” Until the Franco-Prussian War , there were also a number of French guests who donated money for the construction of a Catholic church. With this money, but also with funds from the diocese and the state, the church of St. Bonifatius was built according to the construction plans of the royal chief architect Georg von Morlok (1815–1890). On April 24, 1877, the bishop of Rottenburg, Karl Joseph von Hefele , consecrated the neo-Gothic church, and one year later he established the Catholic parish of Bad Wildbad.

From 1935 to 1937, the church was renovated, with the neo-Gothic decorations on the facade being reduced, and structural measures were carried out to cover the skylights of the central nave. After the end of the Second World War , the number of Catholics in Bad Wildbad grew due to the influx of refugees and displaced persons as well as job seekers. Since the number of spa guests rose rapidly from the 1960s, the construction of the St. Boniface Church was considered. However, since the church was a listed building , the neo-Gothic church could not be demolished, but was renovated in 1978/1979. From 1982 to 1985 the church was extended by a transept according to plans by the architects Lutz und Partner, Stuttgart , so that it has offered 320 seats since then. The original roof shape was also restored and the facade elements were supplemented with the decorations that were dismantled in the 1930s. In 1993 the parish center was built on the east side of the church according to plans by the architect Hans Dieter Lutz. The blasts during the construction of the master tunnel resulted in several cracks on the outer facade. On January 7, 2004, a fire in the left transept caused considerable damage. The repair of the church took over a year and was concluded on April 23, 2005 with a festive service.

Naming and current use

The church of Bad Wildbad received the St. Boniface became the patron saint , as his veneration was revived in the 19th century and his day of remembrance was included in the liturgical calendar of the universal Church at the time the community was built in 1874 . Since St. Boniface had evangelized in the 8th century as a missionary in what is now Germany, one saw a parallel to the structure of the Catholic Church in the 19th century.

The Church of St. Bonifatius is the mother church of the former subsidiary communities Heilig-Kreuz Neuenbürg , St. Bernhard Bad Herrenalb, St. Josef Schömberg and St. Martinus Calmbach. The parish of St. Boniface today (as of 2017) has around 1400 members. Together with Schömberg, Höfen an der Enz , Calmbach and Enzklösterle , St. Bonifatius forms the pastoral care unit Obere Enz .

Building description

Steeple and exterior

Located on the eastern slope of the spa park above the Große Enz, the church rises with its 45 meter high front tower and two turrets flanking on the sides and testifies to the growing self-confidence of the Catholics in Protestant Württemberg. The extension in the form of a modern transept, built in 1983–1985, is clearly visible from the higher-lying Olgastraße . The historical building fabric is cited and at the same time supplemented by the selected building material of natural and brick as well as by the architectural language. On the eastern side of the church, visitors enter the church via a modern portal on the side aisle.

The ringing of the St. Boniface Church consists of four bells . Three of them were cast on December 9, 1960 at the Bachert Brothers bell foundry in Bad Friedrichshall, the fourth dates from the time the church was built around 1880. In the war years 1942 and 1944, two of the three previous bells were removed from the tower and melted down for the defense industry.

The three-aisled wall pillar church is covered by a wooden roof structure that is exposed inside. Arcades separate the main from the side aisles, the organ gallery on the north side rests on three arcade arches. The extension leads around the historical choir of the church as a walkway. Because of the slope, the church is not faces east , but shows with the choir to the south.

Apart from the people's altar , which was erected when the church was expanded in the 1980s, the artistic furnishings have largely been preserved in their original state. The windows are decorated with stained glass from the 19th century: In the choir, the Holy Family is shown on the left , in the middle the baptizing St. Boniface, right the apostles Peter and Paul . There are late Gothic forms of jewelry above the figurative representations . The windows in the side aisles take up this ornamentation, while the round windows above the arcade arches with the initials “A. M. "refer to the Ave Maria , with" S. B. “on St. Boniface. The four Latin church fathers Augustine , Ambrosius , Pope Gregory the Great and Jerome are also shown. The pelican who nourishes its young with its blood refers to Jesus Christ . A cross as a tree of life and the passion tools lance and sponge refer to the passion of Christ. The high altar was carved from oak by Johann Nepomuk Meintel in 1872 . The church patron St. Bonifatius can be seen on the left in the case, on the right St. Leonhard . In the center there is a Mother of God , which is a replica of the Blaubeurer Madonna and was added to the high altar in 1952.
