St. Cecilia (Bösel)
St. Cäcilia in Bösel is the parish church of the Catholic parish of St. Cäcilia in Bösel, which belongs to the Friesoythe deanery of the diocese of Münster .
history
In Bösel there was a chapel congregation within the parish Altenoythe with the parish church of St. Vitus until 1873 . The time of its establishment is unknown. The oldest reference to a chapel with the patronage of Martin von Tours dates back to 1574, but this probably existed before the Reformation . A new chapel was mentioned in 1724, which was rebuilt and expanded from 1798 to 1799.
After the chapel was determined to be in disrepair in 1831 , makeshift repairs were made and a new building was planned. Demolition and construction began in 1836. On July 14, 1839, the new chapel was consecrated by the official Franz Joseph Herold . She received the patronage of Cecilia of Rome in honor of the Grand Duchess of Oldenburg, Cecilia of Sweden , who laid the foundation stone .
By Abpfarrung Boesel was raised in 1873 into an independent parish and the former chapel to the parish church. In 1887 a church tower was built to replace the roof turret that was destroyed by fire in 1885 . From 1922 to 1923 the church was expanded by Wilhelm Sunder-Plassmann . In 1960 the nave that had remained from 1839 was replaced by a wider new building.
description
The hall church made of red brick has had a cross-shaped floor plan since it was extended by a transept in 1922/1923 . With this extension in the neo-baroque style, the choir , side chapel , pietà and sacristy were added. The west tower from 1887 is neo-Romanesque .
Furnishing
Most of the furnishings are neo-baroque and date from the time the extension was built. These include the stone high altar by Fritz Ewertz , who probably also made a side altar , the communion bench and the baptismal font , as well as the Way of the Cross by the painter Wilhelm Lautenbach from Münster and the wall painting by Gerhard Lamers .
The earlier altarpiece , on which Jesus Christ is depicted as the Savior with the cross , was given to the community by Grand Duke August I in 1839 . It was only in 2015 that it was revealed that it came from the workshop of Peter Paul Rubens . After restoration, it was exhibited in a climatic case in the church.
