Parish Church of St. John Baptist

The Roman Catholic parish church of St. Johannes Baptist is a listed church building in Altenberge , a municipality in the Steinfurt district ( North Rhine-Westphalia ). This church is the mother parish of the subsidiary church St. Johannes Nepomuk (Altenberge-Hansell)

History and architecture

Presumably the community is a foundation of the Liudger . The apse of a previous Romanesque building with a west tower was excavated in 1970.

The current church was added to the existing tower in the middle of the 14th century as a hall church of three bays with a polygonal choir . The sacristy is marked with 1590. In 1882 the church tower was torn down and Hilger Hertel the Elder Ä. a neo-Gothic west building in quarry stone with ashlar structure and tower was built. The transverse gables of the aisles were probably reconstructed in 1882 based on findings. The middle yoke with portal is square in sandstone. The two-part portal on the south side, with a vierbahnigen from three- and four passports designed tracery windows , was renewed 1,961th The window and portal are in a common niche . In the wide interior, ribbed vaults rest on round pillars with four services . The narrow aisles are strongly stilted. The bases of the templates and the chalice capitals are broken polygonally. The keystones of the 14th century are painted in color and some show figurative representations. Star vaults were partially drawn into the neo-Gothic western part . In the choir there is a sacrament washbasin and a choir niche . The tendril painting from the beginning of the 15th century was uncovered in 1963. The figural colored window in the choir was created by Victor von der Forst in 1890. In front of the south portal is the larger than life sculpture of John the Baptist, donated in 1983 by Hans Dinnendahl.

Furnishing

  • The neo-Gothic high altar was built in 1883 based on the model of the Gothic winged retable . The carved shrine is attributed to the Langenberg workshop. The wings were painted by Albinus Windhausen.
  • The two side altar retables were created by Gerhard Gröninger . The column retable with a crucifixion relief and passion scenes dates from around 1625. It is crowned with figures of saints from the second half of the 17th century. The Johannes retable from around 1630 made of Baumberger sandstone shows a relief of the baptism of Christ after an engraving by Cornelis Cort from 1575. The carved frame was added around 1700, the putti were added in 1960.
  • A cylindrical font from 1745
  • An oak lectern from around 1500
  • A panel painting from the middle of the 17th century shows Moses with the tablets of the law, it was restored in 1986
  • The Pietà from the end of the 17th century was restored and supplemented in 1972
  • The Kreuzweg signs were painted on copper plates in 1890
  • The four bronze bells were cast in Gescher by Petit & Edelbrock in 1946. There are the Johannesglocke (des '), the Marienglocke (es'), the Lugdgerusglocke (f ') and the Theresa bell (as').

organ

The organ goes back in part to an organ that was built in 1902 by the organ builder Friedrich Fleiter (Münster). In the 1970s the instrument was reorganized by the organ builder Alfred Führer (Wilhelmshaven). The instrument has 24 registers on two manuals and a pedal.

A special feature is a historical octave gel. It comes from a small village near Milan and was bought by the municipality in 1979. The organ builder is unknown. The instrument was probably built between 1800 and 1802. The slider chest instrument has 12 registers on a manual and pedal. The actions are mechanical.
