St John's beheading (Lohmar)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Roman Catholic parish church of St. Johannes Beheading is a listed church building in Lohmar in the Rhein-Sieg district .

history

The church in Lohmar is mentioned for the first time in a document issued on March 31, 1131. In it, Pope Innocent II confirmed to the provost of the Cassius Foundation in Bonn , Gerhard von Are , that he owned the church, Fronhof and tithe in the parish of Lohmar.

Since that time the Cassius pen has exercised the right of patronage in Lohmar. As the owner of the big tithe, it was responsible for the nave and choir .

Building history and architecture

Around 1160 there was a Romanesque church whose choir is still preserved.

It consists of a square choir and a semicircular apse . The outer walls of the choir are structured by profiled eaves , round arch friezes and pilaster strips . The outer surfaces are made of greywacke , the links of tuff , the corner cuboids of andesite . Inside, a triumphal arch separates the choir and nave. The corner services , which support the groin vault and the shield arches , rest on bases . The capitals are decorated with flat foliage .

The Romanesque west tower with groin vaulted hall was renewed in 1778.

The nave, which was renovated in the middle of the 18th century, was replaced between 1900 and 1903 by the construction of a three-aisled neo - Romanesque column basilica made of quarry stone masonry according to the plans of the Royal Building Inspector Kosbab from Siegburg. A square sacristy is built on the right-hand side of the choir, which also still consists of old buildings. Only a Romanesque font made of andesite remains from the former furnishings . It was built in the middle of the 12th century and has a circumferential arched frieze under a bead-shaped, twisted bead.

Between 1964 and 1967 a comprehensive renovation of the entire church took place.

Despite the renovation, the church was in danger of collapsing 40 years later and had to be closed. The church tower and church interior were completely renovated between 2006 and 2011. Since then, services and other church activities have taken place in the church again.

Furnishing

organ

The organ , delivered in 1968 by the organ building company Klais from Bonn , had to be dismantled and stored in 2006 because of the church renovation. When it was reinstalled in 2011, the organ gallery was renewed and more space was created for the church choir.

Bells

In 1928 the renowned Otto bell foundry from Hemelingen / Bremen cast three bronze bells for the Lohrmar parish church. The bells had the sequence of striking notes: dis' - f sharp '- g sharp'. Except for the small G sharp bells, the other two were melted down during World War II. After the war, the community procured two new bells made of cast steel with the same tones as the bells that were lost. The steel bells were cast in the test rib (V7).
