The Catholic parish church of St. Katharina is a listed church building in Rheder , a district of Brakel in the Höxter district (North Rhine-Westphalia). The community belongs to the pastoral area of Brakeler Land in the Archdiocese of Paderborn .

History and architecture

The hall church was built from plastered quarry stone from 1716 to 1718, probably according to plans by Johann Conrad Schlaun . The construction was initiated by the Prince-Bishop's first minister, Baron Bruno Burchard von Mengersen. The walls are divided by buttresses , the choir closes with three cones . The exterior looks unadorned, the tower portal is striking . The slim overall impression of the building is emphasized by a surrounding cornice , which runs around the building above a high plinth.

The new baroque version of the interior was whitewashed with white paint in 1954 and restored in 2011. The interior is an elongated polygon with a 5/10 end in the east and a 3/8 end in the west. The conches of the transepts have narrow lancet vaults . The groin vault in the crossing rests on flat wall templates. The capstone is decorated with a coat of arms.

The crossing is raised, here is the burial place for the von Mengersen family . The von Mengersen were a knightly family , they ruled from 1400 to 1873. The bright glass windows show eight Beatitudes in the colored middle parts . The windows in the choir with depictions of the Sermon on the Mount and the Last Supper were made around 1913, the other windows with inscriptions and the von Mengersen's coat of arms were restored from 1976 to 1977. A comprehensive renovation was necessary in 2012, the plaster was crumbling from the walls, the statics of the roof were at risk and the vaults were threatened. The heating was renewed, windows and various items of equipment were restored. The frame has been renewed inside and out.

tower

The west tower has an octagonal upper floor, which is crowned by a stepped hood . Originally the dome was bulbous and had an open lantern and an onion tip ; after a fire in 1888 it was renewed in a simplified form.

Furnishing

Most of the furnishings date from the time the church was built.

  • The impressive high altar dominates the picture of the interior, it was probably built according to a design by Conrad Schlaun. The column retable is set up in perspective and labeled 1718. Inward-facing pilasters and Corinthian columns are aligned with the altarpiece. A cranked entablature is supported by the pillars and above it is a gable. The golden shimmering, forward-arched, rotating tabernacle stands in front of the high base zone. The expositorium is framed by Corinthian columns. The shell apse is adorned with flower ribbons in the niche there is a crucifixion group with John and Mary. On the roof of the tabernacle lies a golden lamb with a cross flag. Flames burst out of two urns to the right and left of it. Six cherubs are on the pedestal of the reredos. The alliance coat of arms of the von Mengersen family is emblazoned in front of the entablature, it is crowned and accompanied by angels in waving robes. The names of the founder and his wife are recorded in the cartouche below. It is crowned by the animated figures of the dragon slayer Michael , Francis and Franz Xaver . There are figures of Saints Agatha and Katharina in the passageways, made by Mathias Willmers. The altarpiece from 1717 is signed by Johann Martin Pictorius, it shows the holy walk . Mary takes the young Jesus by the hand in the lower part, he is dressed in a red cloak and carries a cross with his left arm, his foster father Joseph walks diagonally behind him. The dove of the Holy Spirit hovers over the family, above God the Father can be seen on a dark bank of clouds. He has placed his left arm on a blue globe, the sky behind him opens up in gold.
  • The baptismal cup is a sandstone cup, the lid is crowned by a secular figure.
  • The veneration of Anne probably had a special meaning in Rheder. The figure of Anna and Maria stands in a niche under a shell canopy on the north wall of the nave. The canopy is decorated with garlands of grapes and flowers, and dancing putti can be seen on the gable . Anna instructs her daughter Maria, who is standing bolt upright in front of her and holding a book that is supported by Anna. Maria has stuck her thumb between the pages of the book like a bookmark. Anna turns her face, covered by a cloth, to the daughter, her left leg is up. The folds of Maria's robe fall quietly, Anna's are wrinkled.
  • The barriers to the transept cones are studded with figures and richly carved.
  • The oil painting from 1717 shows the flight of the Holy Family to Egypt, it is attributed to Pictorius.
  • The Radiant Madonna hangs on a pillar in the crossing, she carries the unclothed Baby Jesus in her arms. Jesus hands his mother a gold-plated rose, this is supposed to be an allusion to the Song of Songs . A crown hovers over Mary's head, and the crescent moon can be seen at her feet, with a snake winding around it. Our Lady crushes her head. The entire depiction is surrounded by putti who hold a banner in the upper part, otherwise they wear cords with pompons.
  • In a shell niche there is a figure representing Antonius.
  • The sandstone epitaph for Hermann von Mengersen, who died in 1585, comes from the previous church.
  • The oil painting with the vision of Johannes von Matha and Felix von Valois was probably painted by Anton Joseph Stratmann in the third third of the 18th century.
  • The pulpit basket is carried by an angel with a fluttering robe and spread wings; below the parapet, small angel heads with wings look into the church. The Holy Spirit is depicted below the sound cover as a dove with outspread wings. Acanthus ornament , on which the good shepherd stands with a sheep slung over his shoulders, climbs up the lid .

organ

The organ was originally built for Blomberg in 1692 . The organ builder is unknown, the front has three towers and is decorated with a figure of David and trumpet angels. After several modifications and extensions (in 1844 Georg Mehring converted the instrument to an 8 'base, Carl Krämer added a new viol in 1880 and Carl Krämer replaced the bellows), the instrument was largely restored to its original condition in 2003. The historical pipe material has largely been preserved, as well as the organ case and wind chests . The instrument has 9 Manual register (Principal 8 ', Salicional 8', viol 8 ', Gedackt 8', Octave 4 ', Gedackt 4', octave 2 ', fifth, 1 1 / 3 ' and mix III), and a pedal stop (Subbass 16 ′).

The instrument is used as part of the OWL organ route, where visitors can hear evidence of baroque craftsmanship.
