The St. Laurentius Church is a Catholic parish church in Contwig , Südwestpfalz district , Rhineland-Palatinate . The patron saint of the church is St. Lawrence . The church is listed in the register of cultural monuments in the district of Südwestpfalz.

history

Until today's church was built, there was no separate church for Catholic Christians in Contwig after the Reformation was introduced in the 16th century. After the Reformation, Protestants have become Church in Contwig 1689 by the French during the Reunionspolitik for interdenominational church declared and shared by the year 1905 by Protestants and Catholics.

It was only at the beginning of the 20th century that a separate church building could be built for the Catholic parish . The foundation stone was laid for this on October 25, 1903. The shell was in December 1904. The three bells cast in Metz were hung in the tower on November 19, 1905 . The inauguration of the Laurentiuskirche finally took place on May 14, 1906. The church was built according to the plans of the architect Wilhelm Schulte in the neo-Gothic style. Craftsmen from Contwig carried out the earthworks, masonry, stone masonry, carpentry and plastering work.

Furnishing

The high altar , a work of the Würzburg sculptor Heinz Schiestl, is worth seeing inside the church . It has the shape of a neo-Gothic winged altar and shows in its center the figure of St. Lawrence, the church's patron.

The three carved figures that adorn the parapet of the pulpit also come from the workshop of the sculptor Heinz Schiestl . The basic material of the pulpit is red sandstone , the sound cover is made of iron.

organ

The organ of the church was built in 1932 by the organ building company Gebrüder Späth ( Ennetach-Mengen ).
