The Roman Catholic parish church of St. Marien is an early Gothic hall church in Volkmarsen in the northern Hessian district of Waldeck-Frankenberg . It belongs to the parish of St. Marien Volkmarsen in the deanery Kassel-Hofgeismar of the diocese of Fulda .

history

The uniform early Gothic hall church with a rectangular, single-nave choir was started in the third quarter of the 13th century and was almost completed when the patronage was transferred to the Augustinian convent Aroldessen in 1317. In the 16th century, the vaulted sacristy was probably added to the north side of the choir. In 1504 the charnel house ( Karner ) with the Marienkapelle above it was built on the north side of the west tower. The upper floor of the tower was built in 1564. After a fire in 1662, the church was renovated in 1669. A restoration was carried out in the years 1857-1859 according to plans by Georg Gottlob Ungewitter . In the years 1903–1907 the tracery windows were renewed. Another restoration was carried out in 1995.

architecture

Exterior

A progressive development of Gothic forms from east to west can be seen in detail. In the wall art, a change from the use of is Wolf to Steinzange the masonry of the south wall visible east of the portal. A scratch drawing of a construction crane with stone tongs suggests that this technique was not yet common at the time of construction. The pillars and their ornaments refer to Westphalian buildings such as the Nikolaikapelle in Obermarsberg and the Marienkirche in Warburg , but are also related to the Elisabethkirche in Marburg .

The portals of the nave are noteworthy. The southern portal was richly designed around 1280 with garment columns , central posts and cloverleaf arches over the two entrances, Wimperg and lateral pinnacles . The portals of Paderborn Cathedral serve as a direct model , similar later examples can be found at the old town church in Warburg and in a simplified form at the south portal of the city church Wolfhagen . In 1404 figures were added that are now in the Lady Chapel and have been replaced by copies on the portal. They show the Mother of God in the tympanum , under the pinnacles on the side Peter and Paul, similar to the Kilian's church in Korbach . The west portal is stylistically more conservative with a slightly pointed arch, regardless of the progressive individual forms. In the tympanum from around 1300 a Deesis is depicted, which probably goes back to the model on the rood screen in Mainz Cathedral . The tower has a recessed upper floor with a low pointed helmet , the stone parapet of which is equipped with tracery and Kurkölner coat of arms. These were also replaced by copies and are now kept in the tower basement and on the churchyard wall. At the former Marienkapelle there is a niche for a funeral lamp with a fine Renaissance grille. Various grave inscription stones with Gothic minuscule inscriptions are walled in on the entire exterior .

Interior

The interior is designed as a hall church with 3 × 3 bays, the side aisles of which are half as wide as the central nave. The vaults are supported by strong round pillars with four old and four high-level young ministries and rich foliage capitals. In the side aisles, these are formed as groin vaults with round profiled belt arches , in the central nave with pear-shaped arches . The decorated keystones show the coat of arms of Cologne Archbishop Adolf III in the central nave yoke . von Holstein and Schaumburg (1546–1556). Gothic wall paintings with a court scene can be found in the south aisle. In the east wall there is a stained glass painting by Ludwig Bauer from 1965. The Marienkapelle is closed by a vault with a central column, the two-bay sacristy with a rib vault.

Furnishing

The stone, neo-Gothic high altarpiece was created in 1867 according to a design by the Cologne architect Peter Zindel and removed from the church in 1965. After a restoration it was put up again in 1995. Three wall tabernacles date from the end of the 13th to the beginning of the 15th century. The baptismal font with apostle reliefs carried by three lions shows strikingly Romanesque shapes and was created by Andreas Herber around 1570. The larger than life crucifix from around 1500 resembles the carved altar from Bergheim . A painting from the first half of the 18th century depicts St. Vitus. Some old, carved bolsters from three periods of the 17th century can still be found. In the basement of the tower there is a figure of Our Lady from the 14th century.

In the Marienkapelle the figures Maria, Peter and Paul are placed from the south portal. An alabaster relief from the former baroque high altar shows the Adoration of the Shepherds and was created by Heinrich Papen in 1671.
