In 1537, the Reformation was introduced in Loburg by the magistrate, which made the Loburg population and the church evangelical-Lutheran. After Catholics had resettled in Loburg in the 19th century, parish vicar Dunkelberg from Gommern held the first Catholic service after the Reformation on August 16, 1904 in the Loburg Schützenhaus.

At the end of August 1909, construction began on the church, which was already blessed by Vicar Eberhard Göbel on December 12, 1909 . In June 1910 his successor, parish vicar Wilhelm Ikemeier, moved his residence to Loburg.

As a result of the Second World War , the number of Catholics in Loburg and the surrounding area increased considerably. In 1939 refugees from Saarland came to Loburg temporarily and in 1944 evacuees from the western regions of the German Reich followed. In 1945/46 refugees and displaced persons from the eastern regions of the German Reich moved in and settled permanently in the Loburg area. As a result, the Loburg parish was established on June 1, 1948. In 1956 new windows were built into the church, in 1962 the church received a new baptismal font , in 1965/66 the altar was moved forward and the tabernacle was given a new place. In 1981 a new wooden ceiling and new benches were installed.

In 1994 the last resident priest , Leo Nöring, was transferred and the pastor from Ziesar took care of the church from then on . On July 8, 1994, the diocese of Magdeburg was founded, to which Loburg has belonged ever since. Since the death of the pastor from Ziesar in 1998, the priestly duties in Loburg have been performed by the pastor from Burg. On February 1, 2006, the community association Burg-Gommern-Loburg was set up, to which the parish Loburg belonged from then on. On May 2, 2010, today's parish of St. John the Baptist emerged from the association, to which the Church of St. Mary in Loburg also belonged in addition to the churches of St. John the Baptist (Castle) and Heart of Jesus (Gommern) . In June 2018, no bidder was found at an auction by the church for a minimum bid of 75,000 euros . On December 29, 2018 the church was profaned in the last service , since then rooms of the Lutheran Laurentius congregation have been used, the Marienkirche was sold.

Interior (2016)

The church building is located at Bundesstraße 246 on the property at Bahnhofstraße 16 and forms a structural unit with the rectory , which is arranged across the nave and on which there is a roof turret. At the beginning of the 20th century, other churches such as the Herz Jesu (Eilsleben) , St. Josef (Löderburg) , St. Paulus (Unterlüß) and Maria Hilfe der Christisten (Wietze) were built in this design . The church is a plastered building on a rubble stone base.

The inside of the church is spanned by a wooden pointed barrel ceiling and can accommodate 70 visitors. The choir has a ribbed vault . In the choir, reliefs from 1958 depict Laurentius of Rome , Simon Petrus , the Virgin Mary , Jesus Christ , the Apostle John , Paulus of Tarsus and John the Baptist (from left to right). To the left and right of the choir there is the tabernacle with a representation of the Holy Spirit in the form of a dove above, as well as, in a small wall niche, a statue of the Virgin, in front of which sacrificial candles can be placed. The interior of the church also includes 16 stations of the cross , a confessional and a mission cross commemorating the popular missions of 1920, 1930 and 1959. The church did not have a pipe organ .
