St. Martin (Bassenheim)
The Catholic parish church of St. Martin in Bassenheim , a local community in the district of Mayen-Koblenz ( Rhineland-Palatinate ), was built between 1899 and 1900.
history
The previous baroque church was a hall building completed in 1722 , which had become too small for the growing population since the middle of the 19th century. The donation of 80,000 marks by Blanche Fauquet (1834–1911) made the larger new building possible.
The demolition of the old church began in 1898 and the neo-Romanesque basilica was built on the same site according to plans by the architect Lambert von Fisenne .
architecture
Exterior construction
The foundation stone of the new building, built on the old foundations, was laid on April 26th, 1899. The inauguration took place on November 15th . The cross-shaped building with a semicircular apse is structured in its wall surfaces by red sandstone . The main nave and the side choirs have gable roofs , the side aisles have pent roofs . A semicircular apse is facing the left side choir. The tower with the main portal and a pseudo transept , in which the entrance hall is located, stands in the middle of the north facade . There is a seven-part wheeled window above the portal.
The nave and the tower are decorated with round arch friezes. The stairs of the tower are visible as semicircular cones .
inner space
The three-aisled basilica with transept creates a bright church space that is divided by alternating columns and pillars . The central nave has two bays and the side aisles that are half as wide have four bays. The yokes of the main axes are separated from one another by pointed arches and have ribbed vaults that rest on corner consoles . The side aisles have groin vaults .
The apse is illuminated through three arched windows. The middle one shows a mercy seat , the left one shows St. Peter and the right the patron saint Martin of Tours as bishop . The windows of the aisles show floral shapes in shades of gray. In the upper storeys , three windows are grouped together, the middle one being larger. Saints are depicted in the central windows. The seven-part wheel windows in the transepts should be emphasized.
organ
On the north gallery is the neo-Romanesque organ prospect . The German romantic organ was built in 1902 by the Gerhardt brothers in Boppard .
In the church is the Bassenheimer Reiter , an early Gothic relief representation of Saint Martin of Tours that is important in art history.
