St. Nikolai in Selbelang

The Protestant village church St. Nikolai is a late Gothic sacred building in Selbelang , a district of the Paulinenaue community in the Havelland district in Brandenburg . It belongs to the Evangelical Church Community Havelländisches Luch in the parish of Nauen-Rathenow .

history

The first written mention of the village comes from the year 1269. It is therefore conceivable that a church already existed at this point in time, but there is no evidence of it in the 21st century. From 1440 builders use the rich clay deposits in the region to get out of brick a nave with a choir to build. 1749 supplemented congregation the building around the West Tower . In 1862 a considerable renovation took place, during which, among other things, the baroque Gothic windows and the portals were enlarged. In place of the flat beam ceiling, the nave was given a four-part vault . During the Second World War , the parish had to hand over the 500 year old bell as part of the metal donation by the German people . However, it was not melted down, but was brought back from the bell cemetery in Hamburg by Pastor Pachali after the end of the war and hung up. Decades of amelioration in the course of the agricultural use of the region caused considerable damage to the structure in the last half of the 20th century: larger cracks and moisture on the roof led to a need for renovation, which a development association has been taking care of since March 2005. An extensive renovation began in 2008 and was successfully completed in 2013.

View from the north

The relatively short ship - in relation to the overall length - was made of reddish brick, like the rest of the building. This is followed to the east by the choir of roughly the same length with a three-quarter end. Its height is not retracted, but a little narrower than the nave. After the enlargement in the 19th century, there are two tracery windows on the southern wall and individual remains of the original window on the western opening. There are other similar windows in the choir. On the north side, both on the nave and the choir, two large clogged windows or openings can be seen, which were carefully closed with masonry stones. The square, baroque west tower is narrower than the nave and is structured with pilaster strips . A cornice separates the two floors with the large west portal through which the church can be entered. Beehive-shaped sound arcades can be seen on the tower floor . Behind it hangs a bell that was cast in 1462. It bears the inscription “Ave Maria gracia plena MCCCCLX II” (Hail Mary, full of grace 1462). Between the sound arcades and the roof, a tower clock with a white clock face is attached on the four sides. The tower itself closes with a curved hood , a tower ball and a weather vane.

Furnishing

altar

The pulpit altar is dated to the year 1718 and consists of Corinthian columns with a central pulpit , which is decorated with acanthus . Carved figures of Jesus Christ and the four apostles stand between fruit hangers ; another six are distributed around the altar. The figures are believed to date from before the Reformation and were taken from a Gothic altarpiece from the 15th century. The figure of Maria is missing, however. The sound cover is decorated with two angels and a representation of Martin Luther . The altar was restored in 1995.

The organ on the western part of the horseshoe gallery was built by Friedrich Emanuel Marx in 1804 with an early classicist front . The furnishings also include four epitaphs showing figures from those of Bardeleben , including Balthasar (died 1579), Wichmann (died 1589) and a children's epitaph from Elisabeth and another woman from the 17th century.

The nave has a vault, the choir has a ribbed vault with 5/8 division and quarter- rod- shaped console stones, which are decorated in the lower part with ventilation pipes in the form of dragon heads.
