The parish church of St. Peter and Paul in the Saarland community of Losheim am See , Merzig-Wadern district is the only Catholic church in the core town of Losheim. It bears the patronage of the apostles and church fathers Simon Peter and Paul of Tarsus . In the list of monuments of the Saarland the church building is a single monument listed.

history

Previous buildings

In the early 1st century. AD the tomb of the Roman customs officer Mibliomarus was on the site of the church on the Losheim cult hill. A Franconian tower church was built around 550, followed by a Romanesque church with a round choir and without a tower around 1100 . Around 1510 a late Gothic hall church was built , which was extended by a nave to the north in 1711 and the interior of the church was enlarged between 1782 and 1783. In 1809/10 the church received a new tower.

St. Peter and Paul today

Today's parish church was designed with the participation of Pastor Groß in 1946 after the previous building - whose roots go back to the Middle Ages - had been destroyed in March 1945 by the effects of the war. The renovation, based on plans by the architect Josef Wilhelm Stockhausen ( Neunkirchen ), turned the former Gothic church into a basilica in the early Roman style. The church is 55 meters long, 19 meters wide and 15 meters high in the middle. The interior consists of a vestibule under the organ gallery, a three-aisled nave and a semicircular choir.

Furnishing

In 1958, the sculptor Hans Glawe ( Göttelborn ) created the so-called “speaking portal” with six bronze plates , which depicts the 2000-year history of the Losheim cult hill .

The windows were designed by church painter Jakob Schwarzkopf ( Trier ) in 1961 , and the Binsfeld (Trier) company was responsible for their execution. Shown are on the left: St. Barbara , St. Cäcilia , St. Oranna , St. Elisabeth , Blessed Blandine von Düppenweiler , on the right: St. Eucharius , St. Wendalinus , St. Lutwinus , Blessed Father Wilhelm Eberschweiler and in the chancel : Peter and Paul.

The monstrance adapted to the altar stele , as well as the baptismal font and the ambo , both of which were made of bronze, were made by Hubert Gotzes, Mauß ( Krefeld ) .

The celebration altar made of sandstone with cross motifs comes from the sculptor Paul Schneider ( Saarbrücken ). The protective mantle Madonna outside the church, also made of sandstone, is a gift from architect Ludwig Röder (Losheim), as is the metal cross cast at the Völklinger Hütte .

organ

The organ was built in 1985 by the organ building company Gebr. Oberlinger Orgelbau ( Windesheim ). The instrument has 45 registers on three manuals and a pedal . To support the preservation of the organ, a support association was founded in 2011. As part of a renovation in 2011, the following new disposition resulted:

Concerts are regularly organized in the parish church, among others by the choir.

Choir

The St. Peter and Paul Losheim Choir is at home in the parish church . The choir organizes the holy masses regularly and on all feast days.
