The St. Remigius Church is a Catholic parish church in Freisen in the Saarland , in the St. Wendel district . It bears the patronage of St. Remigius and is listed as an individual monument in the Saarland monuments list.

history

The first documented mention of a chapel in Freisen comes from the year 1333. The first evidence of a church from 1572.

Today's Church of St. Remigius was built in 1753 as a baroque hall church with a west tower . In 1853 the church was expanded with the construction of a new chancel.

In 1953 a transept and a choir were added to the main nave , giving the building a cross-shaped floor plan . The plans for this came from the architects Albert Dietz and B. Grothe ( Saarbrücken ).

With effect from September 1, 2011, the parish community Freisen-Oberkirchen was established in the deanery St. Wendel , to which in addition to the parish St. Remigius (Freisen) also the parishes St. Marien ( Grügelborn ), St. Katharina ( Oberkirchen ) and St. Laurentius ( Wolfersweiler ) belong.

Furnishing

The interior of the church is richly decorated in the baroque style.

The altars, dating from the 18th century, are decorated with rocailles . The high altar has a two-story structure with eight putti and figures of bishops. The two side altars, which come from the same workshop as the main altar, each have four putti, although the figures in the niches are not original.

The figurative decorations in the church include statues of Our Lady with Child, St. Sebastian and St. Catherine , all of which date from the 18th century.

In front of the church there is a war memorial which, like the church building , is listed as an individual monument in the Saarland monuments list .

organ

The organ of the church was built in 1954 by the French organ builder Haerpfer & Erman ( Boulay ) in the historic housing from around 1860. In 1985 the Hugo Mayer company ( Heusweiler ) made changes to the gaming table .
