The Evangelical Lutheran Church of St. Vitus is located in Frickenhausen , a district of Lauben in the Unterallgäu district in Bavaria . The church is a listed building.

history

The oldest part of the church, the choir and the nave , date back to 1460/70. The inscription 1570 was originally attached to the tower gable . This probably only related to the new tower . In 1730 the interior was redesigned. The extension of the vestibule on the south side also dates from this time. The church was built on a steep castle stable hill west of the village.

Building description

The nave consists of three window axes and has a flat ceiling. The windows have stepped round arches, transverse oval windows are on the western axis. The retracted choir adjoins the nave with a 3/8 end. The choir contains a barrel vault with stitch caps . Outside the choir has corner pilaster strips. Under the eaves of the choir is an arched frieze on consoles. The choir arch was originally pointed, but was rounded off in the 18th century. The arched sacristy portal is located on the south side of the choir. On the west side of the church there is a gallery with a curved central section. The tower is also located on the west side and has a gable roof covered. This consists of five storeys and is divided by strong cornices . Coupled sound arcades are located on the south side of the upper floor. A porch with a gable roof is located on the south side of the church. The arched entrance in a slight risalit . Inside the vestibule there is a groin vault . The sacristy is a rectangular extension and probably dates from the 18th century. This is located on the south side and is covered with a pent roof.

Furnishing

There are several ceiling paintings and wall paintings in the church. These all date from around 1730. The end wall of the choir is decorated with two putti with heraldic cartouches. The choir vault shows the Jews' Easter meal. On the ceiling of the nave is the representation of the Ascension of Christ in the main field . This painting is labeled Johannes Güetler, Stifter, 1730 . The oval corner fields of the nave show the crucifixion , entombment and resurrection of Christ . The outpouring of the Holy Spirit is also shown. The gable of the vestibule contains the coat of arms of the city of Memmingen , as well as the coat of arms of the Memmingen Unterhospital . The coats of arms are marked 1730 .

The stucco inside the church dates from 1730. There are leaf garlands on the ridges of the choir vault. These are decorated with bands and putti heads. A cartouche with an inscription about the renovation in 1730 and 1911 is located above the choir arch. This cartridge also contains the coat of arms of the city of Memmingen and the sub-hospital.

The baptismal font is made of marbled wood and was created in the first half of the 18th century. The crowning figure is John the Baptist . The pulpit dates from around 1730. It is a white and gold-framed wooden structure. On the curved lower part is the basket with two curved sides. The basket is structured by scroll templates . In the fields, the allegory of redemption through Christ, Luther with witnesses from the Old and New Testaments and the circumcision of Christ are shown on paintings . The underside of the cover shows a painting depicting the vocation of Isaiah .

The choir stalls , like the pew and the stable stalls , are made of softwood and date from the 17th or 18th century. The lay chairs come from the 17th century and have curved cheeks with framed fields.

In the church there are several canvas pictures on the gallery parapet. These pictures, from the beginning of the 18th century, show the Annunciation, the Adoration of the Shepherds, the Baptism of Christ and the Lord's Supper . There is also a modern replica of a painting in the church depicting a portrait of Pastor Tobias Hermann († 1609). Likewise the portrait of the pastor Adam Prummer († 1609) and a portrait of Samuel von Wachter, by Elias Friedrich Küchlin from the beginning of the 19th century. The portrait of Johann Rehm comes from the same time and from the same hand. In the choir, the melting of the gold to cast the calf and the dance around the golden calf is depicted.

In the church there is a memorial plaque on Solnhofen limestone for the missing persons from 1805–1815. The memorial plaque is with Reich Sth. designated. On the outside of the church there are two pastors' tombstones from 1789 and 1836. These are also made from Solnhofen limestone.

The neo-baroque altar in the choir of the church dates from 1893 and was created by the Memmingen altar builder and cabinet maker Leonhard Vogt . It is made of oak and painted in color. In the center of the retable is the crucified Jesus Christ . This is from St. Peter (left) and St. Paul (right) flanked in the altar wings. Behind the crucifix is a gilded relief depicting the heavenly Jerusalem .
