St. Wendalinus is a Catholic parish church consecrated to St. Wendelin in Britten , Saarland , a district of the municipality of Losheim am See in the Merzig-Wadern district . In the list of monuments of the Saarland the church building is a single monument listed.

history

The first documentary mention of a church in Britten comes from 1505.

The current church building was erected between 1824 and 1829.

In 1853 the building was expanded by adding a sacristy . Further construction measures were the construction of a gallery in 1885 , the installation of two new windows in 1895, the extension of the tower and sacristy between 1898 and 1899 , as well as the construction of a new entrance and the relocation of the chancel .
After the turn of the century, the building work continued from 1910 to 1911 with the construction of a baptistery on the west side and the installation of several pillars in the church. A tower clock and new windows were installed between 1922 and 1924 . In 1926, the painter company Ocken ( Büren / Westphalia ) carried out a restoration inside the church. The last construction project before the Second World War was the construction of a Lourdes grotto in 1932.

Due to the destruction of the war, no services could take place in the church between 1945 and 1949 . During this time, a hall in the Weyandt inn served as an emergency church . The reconstruction of the church took place from 1947 to 1949 under the direction of the architect Hans Fässy ( Trier ). In 1955, the exterior of the church was restored, the first of many restoration and reconstruction measures. This was followed in 1956 by the installation of a tower clock chimes, in 1957 the restoration of the baptistery, 1961 the installation of stained glass windows , 1963 the installation of a new heating system by the companies Mahr ( Aachen ) and Dewald (Losheim), in 1964 the restoration of the tower clock by the company Schneider (Sonach / Black Forest), from 1965 to 1967 an interior and exterior restoration with enlargement of the sacristy and reconstruction of the chancel, 1969 the construction of a new sacraments and the installation of a new floor covering in the choir and in the sacristy and 1971 the installation of a new heating. For the next ten years, the building activity in and on the church building ceased, before the exterior restoration was carried out from 1981 to 1982 under the direction of architect Walfried Plegnière ( Merzig ). The next interior restoration, for which architect Ludwig Röder (Losheim) was responsible, took place in 1988.

Most recently, the church underwent an interior restoration in 2007, which was followed by restoration of the spire from 2008 to 2009.

Furnishing

The equipment of the church include, designed by architect Fritz Thoma (Trier) and out of sandstone -made high altar from 1952, the execution of Steinmetz Peter Ewerhardy (deer / Saarburg ) was responsible, as well as designed also by Thoma baptismal font from 1955, the Steinmetz Johann Ewerhardy ( Britten) was executed.

Of sculptor Claus Foehr (Trier) of Marienaltar derived from 1953 Metzer from limestone , as well as resulting in the same year statue of the same material, the Maria as a second Eva represents. Also in 1954 resulting crossroads of bronze is the work of Föhr.

Pastor i. The monstrance , donated by R. Alois Fischbach in 1957, was made by church goldsmith Hans Alofs (Trier), who was also responsible for a lecture cross from 1962, three ciborias and a ciborium bowl.

Glass painter Hans Lohbeck (Trier) designed eleven windows of the church in 1961. There are three choir windows with the titles "Christ, the Risen One", "Christ Appears to the Apostle Thomas" and "Christ Appears to Mary Magdalene", as well as eight further windows, which represent the 8 Beatitudes according to 4 Old and New Testament models . The windows were made by the Kaschenbach company (Trier). The four windows in the baptistery, also made by the Kaschenbach company, were made by glass and church painter Reinhard Hess (Trier).

Further items of equipment are the wrought-iron ambo from 1967 made by the Schreiner company (Merzig) , the sacrament house "Das Neue Jerusalem" created by the sculptor Hans Glawe ( Göttelborn ) from 1969, and the sandstone ambo from 1989 by the sculptor Georg Gehring ( Adenau ) which replaces the 1967 anvil.

organ

The organ of the church was built in 1953 by the French organ builder Haerpfer & Erman ( Boulay / Lorraine ). In 1972 the fifth and third in the swell were merged into a sesquialtera by master organ builder Herbert Schmidt ( Mersch / Luxemburg ). A new cymbal was placed on the freed stick of the third.

The cone shop instrument is set up on a gallery and has 19 stops , divided into two manuals and a pedal . The action mechanism is electro-pneumatic, the stop action is electric. The pitch is 440 Hz. The temperature is equal. The disposition is as follows:
