The Stadtmuseum Gehrden is a museum in Gehrden in the Hanover region . Its seat is the listed old brewery of the city.

history

In 1941, the honorary citizen of Gehrden and vice-principal August Kageler founded a city archive in a room in the town hall . In the early 1960s the archive was moved to the Franzburg . The archives in the dilapidated building were lost in 1965 as a result of burglary, theft and vandalism.

In connection with an appeal for donations in kind and money, the city of Gehrden rented the old brewery in 1975. After the former hop floor in the attic was expanded in 1982/83 , the city museum has had its present exhibition space since April 1984.

A group from the Gehrden Heimatbund took over the management of the museum in September 1999. As of 2015, the city of Gehrden is providing 15,000 euros a year for building maintenance.

building

The listed former brewery from 1665 is the third oldest preserved building in Gehrden. Only the Margarethenkirche and the Ratskeller are older .

The city museum on the corner of Dammstrasse and Brauereiweg is a single-storey building with a high basement . The peculiar roof has two continuous dormers on both sides with ventilation openings one above the other. House edges, door and window openings of the plastered building are made of chipped sandstone .

The five exhibition rooms on the main floor and the converted attic can only be reached by stairs. Especially the steep stairs to the top floor cause problems for some users. A handicapped-accessible reconstruction or the installation of a stairlift are not approved for monument protection reasons .

exhibition

In the city museum, around 1,000 exhibits document Gehrden's history.

The exhibition ranges from fossils from the Cretaceous Age and archaeological finds from the Stone , Bronze and Iron Ages to the town and development history of Gehrden and its localities as well as that of the Calenberger Land . These include grave goods from the regionally important grave finds from the Merovingian period in 1997 on the Burgberg in 6/7. Century.

Other focal points of the exhibition are Gehrden's associations , the fire brigade and the craft. In the museum there is a complete forge from the period from 1870 to 1890, a carpenter's workshop and wheelwright from 1900, a shoemaker's workshop from the period from 1870 to 1890 and many objects from rural life.

Between 1999 and 2015, 45 special exhibitions took place in the city museum , which also attracted museum visitors from the Hanover region.

Visitors

The museum is open on Sundays from 3pm to 6pm. From 1999 to 2017 it had a total of 36,000 visitors. In 2017 there were 1,300.
