Life

Stanley Krippner in his dream laboratory, 1969

Krippner was born the son of a German- born farmer and, according to his own account, has been dealing with parapsychological phenomena with which he has come into contact since childhood. As a teenager, he recorded his dreams and evaluated these records on the basis of popular scientific publications on dream interpretation .

Following his early inclinations, he began in 1954 to study philosophy and psychology at the University of Wisconsin , Madison , from which he finally graduated in 1957 from Northwestern University , Evanston , Illinois . In 1961 he received his doctorate there in psychology. In addition to his studies, he worked as a speech therapist at various schools. From 1961 to 1964 he was director of the Child Study Center at Kent State University , Kent , Ohio . From there he moved to Maimonides Medical Center, Brooklyn , New York in 1964 , where he was director of the Dream Research Laboratory until 1973 . During this time he was already in close contact with the parapsychologists Gardner Murphy , whose assistant he was in Hawaii for some time , and Montague Ullmann.

Krippner became a member of the American Psychological Association (APA), the largest North American professional association for psychologists, of which he was president from 1980 to 1981. He was also head of Section 30 of the APA, the Society for Psychotherapeutic Hypnosis. In 2002 he received the APA award for outstanding services to the advancement of psychology.

Krippner is considered an important pioneer of consciousness psychology , on which he has been researching for almost sixty years with a focus on dream research and interpretation, hypnosis, shamanism, especially with and from an intercultural perspective, and focuses on abnormal phenomena, the common scientific and social ones Opposite ideas and norms. His research and lecture trips took him across all continents. He also holds seminars and workshops in many countries around the world. Krippner endeavors to bring together findings from psychology and parapsychology.

In 2009, Krippner appeared in the documentary film Cognition Factor alongside Rupert Sheldrake , Terence McKenna ( ethnoparmacologist ), Ralph Abraham (mathematician / chaos research ), Ralph Metzner (psychologist / Harvard ) and other well-known scientists. The film was about answers to the Big Five questions.

Dream research

The scientific studies that Krippner led in the 1970s at Maimonides Medical Center in Brooklyn on the topics of consciousness and dream research are still considered to be the most extensive that have ever been carried out on these topics. According to Krippner, there are many studies today that deal with the dreams of mentally ill people. He sees an equally great need for action in dream research, which is based on healthy people. "It's important to find out what makes healthy people healthy." Krippner also focuses on the aspect of intuition in dreams. He examines synchronicities and precognitive dreams in the sleep laboratory . Numerous studies in renowned scientific journals have emerged from this. With Ullmann he carried out studies and experiments on telepathy in dreams.

"There is a principle that goes back to the psychologist Alfred Adler, that we dream what we live and live what we dream. And I think that he hit the bull's eye with that."

Parapsychological research with psychoactive substances

Another focus of Krippner's research in the field of parapsychology, the psychology of altered states of consciousness and the healing methods of indigenous peoples lies in the psychology of consciousness in relation to psychoactive substances. In the experiments of his studies, he put the subjects under the influence of substances such as marijuana, LSD or psilocybin. Krippner found out that the test subjects 'experiences reflect more anecdotal accounts and that users' self-assessments reported increased "paranormal abilities" during the active phase of these substances. In this research field, Krippner primarily looked at the associated health and psychological problems.

Shamanism research

For many decades, Krippner has been researching the tension between traditional healing methods ( ethnomedicine ) from other peoples and modern western medicine. This made him one of the most important shamanism researchers of our time. In October 2005 he attended the “World Conference of Ethnotherapies” as a speaker, to which healers, doctors and scientists from all over the world came to Munich . Krippner distinguishes eleven types of ethnomedicine. Four shamanic (in Bali , Peru and two Indian tribes), three folk healing traditions (in the Philippines , in southern Italy and in Mexico ), two religious ( Islamic and Ayahuasca cult in South America ) and two alternative medical systems ( traditional Chinese medicine and the South American kalam) . He justifies the growing interest in ethnomedicine in the western world with the appeal of the World Health Organization (WHO), which called for cooperation with healers as early as 1977, as well as the worldwide migration and refugee movement, which preferred doctors with ethnomedical knowledge. Furthermore, the herbal medicine- based healing art of the shamans and healers is an important addition to Western medicine. On average, according to Krippner, "one third of herbs are very effective", one third cannot do any harm ( placebo ) and one third is questionable. In addition to scientific publications, many of his findings from research work and trips on the subject of shamanism have been incorporated into numerous popular books, such as Healing and Shamanism: Documents of Other Realities (1986) or Spiritual Dimensions of Healing: From Native Shamanism to Contemporary Health Care ( Frontiers of Consciousness, 1992).
