geography

course

The Steinbach rises in the Taunus Nature Park . Its source is in the Taunus town of Steinbach at around 165  m above sea level. NHN and emerges at the end of the piping in the meadow corridor behind the wheat garden northwest of the Wiesenstrolche daycare center .

First the Steinbach flows in a south-easterly direction through the Saure Wiesen corridor and then between the Wingerten corridor and the Kreuzwiesen . He is accompanied by native bushes and individual trees. Its sole substrate there consists of natural gravel and crushed stone. After leaving the urban settlement area, it flows along the border between Steinbach and Eschborn through meadows and fields and changes to the Eschborn district after crossing under the tracks of the Homburg Railway . In this area it is also called Steinbachgraben . He crosses at the rest area Taunusblick the National Highway 5 , where he leaves the Taunus Nature Park.

It now flows into the urban area of Frankfurt am Main , on which it covers the following 2.1 kilometers to the mouth. The Steinbach runs along the border between the Frankfurt districts of Niederursel and Praunheim , past the old brickworks and the Praunheimer cemetery . The Klettenburg was located in this area . Shortly before crossing under the Praunheimer Weg , it finally enters the Praunheim district.

Finally, the Steinbach passes under the street in the city of Rome, flows through the Fritz-Lenning system and leads finally at the former Walserhaus mill to approximately 103  m height in a backwater of the Nidda .

Dates and character

The Steinbach is a carbonate low mountain range rich in fine material . The catchment area of the Steinbach covers an area of 10.10 km², from which an average of 62.7 l / s flow off.

Since the springs in the old town center of Steinbach have largely dried up, the stream only carries water periodically on days with heavy rainfall. This is especially the case in the winter months. The brook is piped underground from the Am Alten See area and the Pjinackerplatz fountain to the outskirts. In 2010, a concept was drawn up in the village of Steinbach as to how the floodplain of the stream could be redesigned in a natural way.

In Praunheim, where the Steinbach forms the border to Heddernheim in sections , it was piped in the 1960s between Haingrabenstrasse and its confluence with the oxbow lake of the Nidda. There the brook was exposed and renatured again for the 1200th anniversary of the town in 2004. Meadows, woodlands and wetlands alternate with leisure facilities.

Castle on the Steinbach

On the left side of the Steinbach , between today's streets Am Alten Schloß and In der Römerstadt, the Klettenburg was once located .
