Stephan Ehses (born December 9, 1855 in Zeltingen (Mosel) ; † January 19, 1926 in Rome ) was a German Roman Catholic pastor , church historian , prelate and director of the Roman Institute of the Görres Society from 1895 to 1926.

Life

Stephan Ehses was born in 1855 as the son of a wealthy winemaking family in Zeltingen on the Moselle and was named after the patron saint of the Zeltingen parish, St. Stephen , baptized. Together with his cousin Franz - like his brother Karl before - he went to Trier as a Konvikt student and attended the royal high school , where he graduated from high school in 1876. Since the Trier seminary was closed because of the Prussian culture war , he went to study at the University of Würzburg . There he received his doctorate in philosophy in 1881 with a study of the history of the War of the Bavarian-Palatinate Succession . In the same year he published a work on the so-called Pack's Handel , an event in the history of the Reformation that was not without opposition. Ehses worked on the subject further and published a reply to his opponents five years later. During his studies he became a member of the KDStV Markomannia Würzburg in the CV in 1876 .

After finishing his studies in Würzburg Stephan Ehses occurred - as then many seminarians from the Prussian countries and most Trier theology students - in the seminary Eichstaett and received on 15 July 1883, together with his cousin Franz Ehses in Eichstatt Dom the priesthood . As a pastoral activity in his home diocese of Trier was not possible due to the Kulturkampf legislation, Ehses went to the Campo Santo Teutonico in Rome as a chaplain soon after his ordination and continued his historical studies there until Bishop Michael Felix Korum met him because of the great shortage of priests called back to Trier. In October 1885 Ehses took over the position of chaplain in Koblenz-Ehrenbreitstein and in 1887 in Koblenz- Liebfrauen . In 1891 he was given leave to continue his historical studies in Rome, in 1893 pastor in Karweiler and in 1895 again in Rome. On January 1, 1895, he succeeded the founder Johann Peter Kirsch , whose secretary he had been since 1891, and became director of the Roman Institute of the Görres Society. From 1897 to 1906 he was also editor of the historical part of the Roman quarterly for Christian antiquity and church history .

After Italy entered the First World War in 1915, Ehses, like many German citizens, had to leave Italy. After various activities in Berlin, Bonn and Munich, he became rector of the Catholic orphanage in Boppard in 1920 . He returned to Rome at the beginning of November 1925, but died there in January 1926, probably as a result of his diabetes . He was buried in the Campo Santo Teutonico in Rome.

Stephan Ehses was scientifically (historically) active for decades. His list of publications includes 124 publications, mainly on the church history of the 16th century. His most important academic achievements are the publications in the field of the history of the nunciature and the edition of the negotiation protocols of the 1st and 3rd periods of the Council of Trent (1545–1563), of which he wrote four extensive volumes between 1903 and 1924 despite the World War and inflation ( IV, V, VIII and IX).

The University of Münster earned Ehses a Dr. theol. hc; In 1897 he was appointed papal secret chamberlain , in 1902 papal house prelate, in 1904 apostolic protonotary and in 1911 censor of the Academia Canonica Vaticana.
