Stephan Kaluza (born April 5, 1964 in Bad Iburg ) is a German photo artist, painter and author.

Life

From 1986 to 1994, Stephan Kaluza studied under Assmann at the Düsseldorf University of Applied Sciences, and at the same time studied art history at the Düsseldorf Art Academy . Kaluza then completed these studies in the Philosophical Faculty of Heinrich Heine University in Düsseldorf. Kaluza now lives in Düsseldorf.

From 2004 Kaluza began to focus on the medium of photography in addition to painting; In 2007 the "Rhine Project (complexe 1)" was published. For this project, the artist and his team walked the entire bank of the Rhine from the source in Switzerland at Badus to the mouth in Hoek van Holland over a period of 8 months and photographed the opposite bank of the Rhine panorama every minute. Around 35,000 photos were created in this way, which were then put together to form a singular image; the entire flow was visualized in this way simultaneously. A year later, Kaluza dealt in a similar way with the Thames and the Thai archipelago Ko Phi Phi Don and Ko Phi Phi Leh and the already defunct Berlin Wall.

Between 2004 and 2009, the so-called “picture pieces” were created to the same extent - also a large number of photos lined up and depicting plays and performances, for example the 300-meter-long work “Cages”, a visual interpretation of the “Orestie” v. Aichylos. In 2012 the book “Felder” was published by Dumont-Verlag; It shows recordings of battlefields in their current state, the pictures thus refer to the imaginable "pictures behind the pictures", the reminiscences that the viewer finds in place names such as u. a. Waterloo, Verdun and Somme open.

Since 1995 Kaluza has exhibited his work in various galleries, later museum exhibitions followed, including a. in the Museum on the Seam, Jerusalem, in the State Museum of Contemporary Art, Seoul, in the Kunsthallen Düsseldorf and Osnabrück, as well as in the Zendai Museum of Modern Art, Shanghai and in the Kunstverein Bethanien, Berlin.

Since 2006 Stephan Kaluza has published plays such as u. a. “Atlantic Zero”, “3D”, “Because I Can Do It” and “Sand” by Suhrkamp Verlag, Berlin. World premieres of these pieces were seen in 2010 and 2011 at the Schauspielhaus Düsseldorf and at the Deutsche Oper am Rhein, Düsseldorf. In November 2012, the chamber play "3D" was premiered at the Staatsschauspiel Stuttgart under the direction of Stephan Kimmig. In 2013 and 2014 the novels "Geh auf Magenta" and "30 Keller" were published by the Frankfurt publishing house. In the fine arts, as in his follow-up novel "A Possible Place", Kaluza now deals with the transience of things and the phenomenon of the idyll.
