Stephan von Spee

Count Stephan von Spee (born August 5, 1866 at Linnep Castle ; † November 29, 1956 in Obersalwey ) was a German politician and Prussian district administrator in the Borken district .

Life

He came from the Rhenish noble family von Spee , who had been raised to the rank of count in 1739 . His father was Ferdinand Anton Karl Wilhelm von Spee, a son of Franz von Spee , his mother Paula Maria Julia von Robiano. In 1908 he married Anna Maria Freiin von Wrede (1887–1959), who had eleven children by 1930. Through them, the castle and estate of Ahausen near Finnentrop came into the possession of the von Spee family.

After attending the Knight Academy in Bedburg , von Spee studied law in Bonn , Berlin and Freiburg im Breisgau . After graduating from 1886 to 1887, he was a soldier as a one-year volunteer with the Guard Rifle Battalion in Groß-Lichterfelde and became captain of the reserve. In 1889 he passed the examination to become a trainee lawyer and worked at the higher regional court in Hamm . In 1892 he joined the government in Aurich as a government trainee . In 1895 von Spee passed the exam to become a government assessor. As such, he was initially employed by the District Office for the Wesel district . In 1898 he moved to the Bunzlau district and a year later to the government in Hanover . In 1903 von Spee was promoted to councilor. From 1904 he was the district administrator in the Borken district. He contributed significantly to the establishment of the Kreissparkasse. He also earned services in welfare work during the First World War . Von Spee was director of the agricultural district association, a member of the Westphalian provincial council , the Westphalian antiquity association and a member of the supervisory board of the Westphalian electricity company . In addition to numerous Prussian orders and awards, von Spee also received a number of Catholic honors. For example, he was the secret chamberlain di spada e cappa of Pius XI. In Borken he was made an honorary citizen. Because he had reached the age limit, he retired from active civil service in 1931. His second oldest son Friedrich died in 1945. Stephan Graf von Spee died at the age of 90 in what was then Obersalway.
