When Russell Mulcahy was offered the film Highlander (1986) to direct, Hopkins took over the second unit directing of the project. Just a year later, Hopkins directed Dangerous Game for the first time.

He has since moved to Hollywood in 1989, followed by Nightmare on Elm Street 5 - The Trauma and, in 1990, the first major highlight of his career was Predator 2, starring Danny Glover . Despite enormous technical efforts, the film was unsuccessful and a planned sequel was not realized.

He directed twelve of the 24 episodes of the first season of the television series 24 , which also brought leading actor Kiefer Sutherland back from oblivion. This was followed by the television series Traffic , based on Steven Soderbergh's film Traffic - Power of the Cartel , and the series Californication with David Duchovny .

Hopkins returned to the cinema in 2004 with the film adaptation of Peter Sellers ' Life: The Life and Death of Peter Sellers, starring Geoffrey Rush . The Reaping followed in 2007 with Hilary Swank .
