Steven Bernstein (born October 8, 1961 in Washington, DC ) is an American jazz trumpeter and band leader, composer and arranger .

life and work

Bernstein first worked in Karen Mantler's band . From 1989 he became known as the musical director of John Lurie's band Lounge Lizards . During his ten-year membership in the group, he wrote the arrangements and a. to Get Shorty , Clay Pigeons and Fishing With John . In 1992 he recorded the first album with this group as the coleader of the trio Spanish Fly (with David Tronzo and Marcus Rojas ). He produced the music for Robert Altman's film Kansas City (1996) and directed the Kansas City Big Band , which included David “Fathead” Newman , Don Byron , James Carter , Christian McBride and Nicholas Payton .

In 1995, Bernstein founded the band Sex Mob together with Briggan Krauss , Tony Scherr and Kenny Wollesen , which performed worldwide and whose album Sexotica was nominated for a Grammy for Best Contemporary Jazz Album in 2006. His own band project Diaspora Soul combines klezmer melodies with Cuban rhythms. In 1999 he founded the Millennial Territory Orchestra (MTO), whose debut album was released in 2006. Bernstein was a member of the Levon Helm Band from 2004 until the band leader's death and played on the albums Electric Dirt and Ramble at the Ryman , which won a Grammy in 2010 and 2012. He co- directs a Hot 9 with Henry Butler , with whom he appeared in Robert Altman's 1998 film Kansas City , which also includes Peter Apfelbaum , Reginald Veal and Herlin Riley ( Viper's Drag , 2013).

Bernstein wrote the arrangement for Bill Frisell's album Unspeakable , which won a Grammy in 2004, and also arranged for musicians such as Lou Reed , Rufus Wainwright , Darlene Love , Elton John and the album The Legendary Marvin Pontiac: Greatest Hits . As a sideman he worked a. a. with Aretha Franklin , Marianne Faithfull , Linda Ronstadt , David Murray , David Berger , Sting , Medeski, Martin & Wood , Courtney Love , Ryuichi Sakamoto , Don Byron, Karl Berger and Mocean Worker ; his discography as a sideman includes more than a hundred albums.

Bernstein mainly plays slide trumpet .
