history

The Pomeranian Foundation was established on December 16, 1966 by law of the State of Schleswig-Holstein as a foundation under public law. The seat of the foundation was the Rant Zauberau in Kiel Castle .

The founding holdings of the foundation consisted of paintings, drawings and graphics from the former City Museum of Szczecin . In March 1945 these pictures were brought from Stettin to Coburg , where they were stored in the Veste Coburg until 1970 . The Prussian Cultural Heritage Foundation then looked after the collection. After negotiations between the President of the Prussian Cultural Heritage Foundation, Hans-Georg Wormit , and several cities and museums, Kiel was awarded the contract because the Rant Zauberau appeared to be a suitable collection location and the State of Schleswig-Holstein had taken on the sponsorship of Pomerania in 1954. The Coburg State Foundation received three images as a "custody fee". In 1972 the collection was presented to the public in an exhibition in Kiel.

In addition to the Szczecin art holdings, the foundation built up an extensive cultural history collection and library on Pomerania.

With the establishment of the Pommersches Landesmuseum Foundation in Greifswald in 1996, the holdings of the Pommern Foundation should be present in Western Pomerania again. After the opening of the Pomeranian State Museum in Greifswald, the Pommern Foundation was dissolved by law on December 31, 2000. The legal successor to the foundation is the state of Schleswig-Holstein. Half of the foundation capital was given to the State of Schleswig-Holstein and half to the Pomeranian Central Association. Collections

The holdings brought to the Pomerania Foundation from the Szczecin Collection comprised around 200 paintings , 300 drawings and 600 sheets of prints . The beginnings of the collection go back to the 19th century, when the Art Association for Pomerania, founded in 1834, bought pictures of the then current art. The foundation's gallery showed works from the 17th, 18th and early 19th centuries by artists of the Romantic period , the Munich and Düsseldorf Schools of Painting , from Classical Modernism to the present day. Paintings and graphics by Ferdinand Georg Waldmüller , Theodor Hosemann , Wilhelm Leibl , Carl Schuch , Wilhelm Trübner , Fritz von Uhde , Max Slevogt , Max Liebermann , Frans Hals , Georg Flegel , Jakob Philipp Hackert , Caspar David Friedrich , Philipp Otto Runge , André Derain , Maurice Utrillo , Vincent van Gogh , Lyonel Feininger testify to a modern collection strategy.

The cultural history collection included maps , views of towns, coins , medals , autographs and an image archive. The library had around 20,000 books and writings on Pomeranian history and regional studies . The Pomeranian Landsmannschaft had compiled parts of the library's holdings before the foundation was established . The foundation expanded the library stock through acquisitions and bequests.
