history

Strehla was first mentioned in 1242 as "Strel". In the following time the name was changed from “Strelen” in 1360 to “Strelan” in 1396. In 1571 it was called “Stelenn” and in 1791 “Strehla”. The place name comes from Sorbian and is derived from the ancient Slavic * strěla ("arrow"). In place and body of water names this probably means something like “water jet” or “river arm”.

The place was partly under the lordship of the Bautzen council and partly under that of the Landvogtei Bautzen .

Strehla was an independent rural community until 1913, when it was incorporated into Bautzen . On July 25, 1952, the location was assigned to the then newly formed Bautzen district in the Dresden district . After the change in the GDR , the place was assigned to the old district of Bautzen on August 1, 1994 , and since the district reform in Saxony on August 1, 2008 , the village has belonged to the Bautzen district . Today, Strehla is structurally fused with the Ostvorstadt district of Bautzen .

For the year 1547 there were nine possessed men in Strehla . In 1777 there were seven possessed men and three gardeners . In 1834 the place had 74 inhabitants. For his statistics on the Sorbian population in Upper Lusatia, Arnošt Muka determined a population of 93 inhabitants for 1884, of which 78 were Sorbs (84%) and 15 were Germans.
