The Cosmos Rocks is the fifteenth studio album by Queen , released in 2008, and the only studio album by Queen + Paul Rodgers . It is the first joint album by the remaining Queen members Brian May and Roger Taylor since Made in Heaven , the band's last studio album with the original line-up, released thirteen years earlier.

The album

A few months after the completion of the worldwide tours of Queen + Paul Rodgers, which began in 2005, work began on a studio album in autumn 2006. The recording sessions, each lasting several weeks, took place in Roger Taylor's studio in Surrey and lasted until 2008. The album was mastered in early August.

Brian May, Paul Rodgers and Roger Taylor sang and played all instruments themselves; only in the song C-lebrity contributed Taylor Hawkins from the Foo Fighters additional backing vocals on. Most of the lead voice sang Rodgers. The stylistic spectrum of the album includes hard rock , blues rock and ballads .

As the first joint studio release of Queen + Paul Rodgers, 2007, the ballad was released in late Say It's Not True for free on the band's official website, and then as a single in favor of Nelson Mandela's 46664 - AIDS -Benefizprojekten. In early September 2008, the hard rock track C-lebrity, also composed by Roger Taylor, was released as a pre-release single. The album The Cosmos Rocks was released in German-speaking countries on September 12, 2008, when Queen + Paul Rodgers' European tour began with an open-air concert in front of 350,000 spectators in Ukraine. Three days later, on September 15th, the album was released in most other countries; in North America, The Cosmos Rocks was only released by Hollywood Records in late October.

The trio dedicated the album to Freddie Mercury ; Queen bassist John Deacon, who was not involved in the recordings, and Paul Kossoff , the guitarist of Rodgers' former band Free , who is thanked in the first place in the liner notes . The album cover was designed by Richard Gray, who has been responsible for the design of all Queen albums since 1986. The pictures are from the photographer Edgar Martins.

The album was essentially released in three different physical formats: as a CD, as a limited deluxe edition including an additional DVD with live recordings (see list of titles below) and as a vinyl double LP. Furthermore, various online editions are offered, with an exclusive bonus track on iTunes .

The song Take Love , written by Paul Rodgers and played live as part of the North American tour in 2006, was also recorded in the studio, but not completed.
