Sylvester Carmel Magro

Sylvester Carmel Magro OFM (born February 14, 1941 in Rabat , Malta ; † January 20, 2018 in Msida ) was a Maltese religious and apostolic vicar of Benghazi .

Life

Sylvester Carmel Magro came in 1957 in the Congregation of the Franciscan one, studied philosophy and theology at the Franciscan Seminary in Rabat and received on 26 March 1966, the sacrament of Holy Orders . Further studies followed at the Pontifical Antonianum University , the Franciscan Order College in Rome, and the Pontifical Lateran University in Rome, where he received his doctorate in dogmatics and pastoral theology . He returned to Malta and initially taught at the Franciscan seminary. In 1982 he became pastor of the Sacred Heart Congregation in Sliema . In 1988 he joined the Franiscan Mission of the Province of Milan in Libya and in 1991 took over the management of the Province of Malta. In 1991 he became vicar general under Giovanni Innocenzo Martinelli and was chaplain for the Maltese and English-speaking congregations in Libya .

On 10 March 1997 appointed him Pope John Paul II. To the titular of Saldae and ordered him to the Apostolic Vicar of Benghazi . The Apostolic Nuncio in Libya, Archbishop José Sebastián Laboa Gallego , donated him episcopal ordination on May 11 of the same year ; Co- consecrators were the Archbishop of Malta , Joseph Mercieca , and the Vicar Apostolic of Tripoli , Giovanni Innocenzo Martinelli, OFM.

Pope Francis accepted his age-related resignation on February 14, 2016.
