The synagogue in Linnich , a town in the Düren district in North Rhine-Westphalia , was built in 1913 and was located on the north promenade.

history

The Jewish community Linnich had until the construction of the synagogue a prayer room in the Rurdorfer Straße 13 at the rear. He was 5 × 10 m tall. It had a west gallery with stained glass windows on the north and south sides. After many years of collecting money for a new building , the synagogue was built according to the plans of the architect Hermann Arnold , professor at the Aachen Royal Building Trade School. The inauguration took place on November 7th, 1913 by the Cologne Rabbi Abraham Frank .

architecture

The synagogue was a square central building which , in addition to the prayer room, also housed the Jewish school that had been relocated from the east promenade. The design followed the geometric Art Nouveau that was prevalent before the First World War . The front sides of the hexagon were low structures with doors for men and women on the portal front (with subsequent staircases to the women's galleries ) and to the assembly room in the basement. There was an oculus above each of the three entrances , the spokes of which formed a star of David . The middle door was decorated with ornaments and above it was the Hebrew inscription: For my house will be called a house of prayer for all peoples . ( Isaiah 56: 7). The building was structured by cornices and had a pyramid roof on which a Star of David was enthroned.

The Torah shrine faced northeast and the seats followed the sides of the hexagon. On both sides of the Thoranic there were three tall, narrow windows, which were combined with a cornice.

time of the nationalsocialism

During the pogrom on November 10, 1938 , the synagogue was set on fire by SA men from Hückelhoven . It burned to the ground. The Torah scrolls and all of the interior furnishings were also a victim of the flames. In 1950 the property was leveled.

Commemoration

On November 10, 1988, a memorial stone was dedicated on the site of the synagogue .
