Localization of the canton of Uri in Switzerland

The Türmli is located in the municipality of Altdorf in the canton of Uri . The tower, built in the middle of the 13th century, is one of the oldest buildings in the canton. 86 steps lead to the viewing platform at a height of 17.8 meters. The platform offers a view of Altdorf and the Urner Alps .

history

The foundation walls of the tower date from the middle of the 13th century. Originally, the building served as a residential tower for a local feudal lord. In 1517 it became the property of the Uri estate. Soon afterwards, the government had Uri's first mechanical clock installed in the tower. The tower increasingly became a sovereign building with a wide range of functions.

The Tell monument has stood on a plinth in front of the Türmli since 1895 . It is the work of the then highly regarded Solothurn sculptor Richard Kissling .

In 2011 the interior of the tower was extensively renovated. The monument can be visited freely and free of charge.
