The TF Green Airport is the airport of Providence , the capital of the US state Rhode Island . It is located in the district of the city of Warwick and is named after the former governor Theodore F. Green .
history
The airport opened as Hillsgrove State Airport in July 1931 . It has been owned by the State of Rhode Island from the start, making it the first state-owned airport in the United States. In January 1933 the first reception and administration building is inaugurated.
The first runways on the originally 158 acre site were only leveled. In 1935, a 3,000 ft (914 m) long runway made of cement was built, and the airport was also given lights for night flights and a radio station. On December 27, 1938, Governor Robert E. Quinn ordered that the airport be given its current name in honor of his predecessor Theodore F. Green.
After the United States entered World War II , the United States Army Air Forces took control of the airport on April 1, 1942 . Until September 26, 1945, the Army Air Forces used Hillsgrove Army Air Base as a base for combat and training units.
A new station building was inaugurated in 1961, so that it would also be suitable for the increasing traffic with jet aircraft , the runways were extended in 1966. The present reception building , named after Governor Bruce Sundlun , dates back to 1996. In 2005 the record number of passengers of 5.7 million was reached.

TF Green Airport is used by ten airlines. The airline Southwest Airlines is the largest provider in terms of passenger numbers . TF Green Airport has scheduled flights to 21 destinations across the United States. In 2015–2016, the Condor airline operated direct flights to Frankfurt am Main twice a week on Mondays and Thursdays in the summer season from June to September . The connection was flown with a Boeing 767-300 .
