Tabula Rasa (original tabula rasa ) is a Belgian - German drama - miniseries in 2017, produced on behalf of ZDFneo and the VRT , based on the idea of Malin-Sarah Gozin who also co-wrote the screenplays.

action

After a car accident, Annemie D'Haeze, called Mie, has a special form of memory loss and therefore lives in a closed psychiatric ward . She remembers life before the accident very well. But she forgets new memories after a day. She herself describes this as a sandstorm that goes by and sweeps everything away. In particularly stressful situations, she forgets things particularly quickly. Mie was the last to have seen contact with the missing scrap dealer Thomas de Geest, so the police are hoping to solve the case with her help.

In order to find her way in everyday life, Mie has started to record her daily experiences in a personal diary. These personal notes also contain the information that her own house burned down and that she then moved with her family to her grandfather's house in the forest. But somehow it seems to Mie as if someone is manipulating her notes, so she doesn't know who to trust and who to trust.

Cast and dubbing

The German dubbing was based on a dubbing book by Harald Wolff and directed by Harald Wolff on behalf of Cinephon Filmproduktion Berlin.

critic

Veronica Wulff writes in her review in the Süddeutsche that the dialogues seem awkward, there is no real tension and the music reliably leads to every climax. She perceived Veerle Baetens positively in the role of Mie, from her point of view she looks natural and portrays both the self-confident and sensible side of her character as well as the erratic confused side well.

Frederiksson also praises the multi-faceted presentation of Baetens in the Frankfurter Rundschau . He also emphasizes that the sound effects and the music create a constant horror and that the camera work is refreshingly different from German productions. But he also notes that the plot is not new and follows the expected twists, but that these are well designed in terms of film.

Vanessa Schneider from Bayerischer Rundfunk is enthusiastic about the imagery, which reminds her of Scandinavian productions. What is particularly arty in her eyes is that Mie's forgetting is represented by the fact that objects in the picture run down to sand.

Critics in English-speaking countries are also enthusiastic about the imagery, writes Euan Ferguson in the British Guardian that the imagery in Tabula Rasa reminds him of a good 50s film. In the US NY Times , Margaret Lyons writes that Tabula Rasa is frighteningly unsettling, but not in a slasher way , but more like a kind of poisoned poem.
