The Orlík dam (also: Worlik dam; Czech Orlická přehrada ) is 80 km south of Prague on the Vltava . The dam is the largest in the Czech Republic , an important link in the Vltava cascade and was built for power generation, flood protection and water regulation of the Vltava. It is also used for water sports , shipping and recreational activities. The dam is named after the Orlík Castle , which is located directly on the reservoir.
The reservoir is 68 km long and extends 22 km into the Otava valley as well as the Lomnice and Skalice rivers. The dam ends at Týn nad Vltavou , where the Kořensko hydroelectric power station , which also dams the Lainsitz , is located. The Vltava cascade continues below the dam at Solenice in the Kamýk hydropower plant .
The concrete gravity dam was built from 1956 to 1963. On the right side of the dam center is the flood relief system with three 15 m wide openings and 8 m high steel gates. The two bottom outlets have a diameter of 4 m. The total flow rate of these openings is 3 × 728 plus 2 × 185 m³ / s, together 2554 m³ / s.
The hydropower plant has four Kaplan turbines with a capacity of 150 m³ / s each and 4 × 91 = 364 MW electrical power. The average water flow rate is 83 m³ / s.
There are two transport facilities for ships on the right slope . Sports boats up to 3.5 tons are transported up and down with a small inclined elevator; the larger elevator for ships up to 300 tons was never completed and put into operation.
