action

One night an old confused man appears in front of the house of Inspector Paul Brix and his landlady Fanny. After trying unsuccessfully to set the house on fire, he becomes faint and is taken to a clinic. Brix, who cannot explain what could have driven the old man to Fanny's house, finds a child's skeleton in the attic. He notifies his colleague Anna Janneke so that she can take care of Fanny, who seems to be overwhelmed by the whole situation. Then he drives to the nursing home , 6 km away , from which the man ran away, and meets his granddaughter Merle there. According to the home management, the man, Otto Schlien, was found lying lifeless on the floor and disappeared when the emergency doctor arrived. Together with Merle, the inspector drives to the hospital to which her grandfather was brought. There Brix gives the found bones to the forensic medicine department.

Otto Schlien is horrified to learn that Brix has found the "girl" from the attic and removed it. He has a seizure and can only be restrained by the nurses with one injection. Merle had locked himself in a toilet to text. (It can be seen that someone wrote to her to find out where Brix's house is.) While her grandfather is having the seizure, the ghost of a dead woman appears in the toilet, who seems to be seeking her life. Merle's calls for help alert Brix, who rushes to her and frees her from the toilet.

Research reveals that the house was an orphanage after World War II . It was run by the mother Otto Schliens until she drowned in the nearby stream because of a prank by the children in the home. Then the doctor Dr. Gerhard continues the home. After that, toys, treasures, everything that was valuable to the children disappeared, and finally a seven-year-old girl. The associated spooky rumors caused the house to be closed, which then stood empty for 40 years.

Otto Schlien has refused to this day to give his family the address of the home, although his son Lutz is very interested in it. Merle also wants to go there. Brix and Merle learn from Otto's wife that rumors said: Otto took the children's toys and hid them in the attic until the mother's ghost appeared and demanded a human sacrifice. Otto refused, however, whereupon his mother threatened to take his loved one away from him. That was seven-year-old Helga at the time, but Brix took her remains with her and now she is allegedly demanding a replacement: Merle, because she is now the dearest thing Otto Schlien has.

Brix and Merle visit the town's mayor, who turns out to be the son of Dr. Gerhard turns out; his twin brother is even Brix's neighbor. When the mayor of Brix learns that he is interested in the old stories, he fears that the truth about his father might come to light and he visits the sleeping Otto Schlien in the hospital. Unnoticed, he smothered the old man with a pillow. To this day, Ursula Schlien had taken her husband to be the murderer of little Helga, but at that time he only wanted to protect the girl. After his mother's death, Dr. Gerhard not only took over the management of the home, but also passed out to pretty little Helga. When he tried to get her out of her bed one evening, she and Otto had fled to the attic and they both hid in the closet. Because she began to scream in fear when Gerhard approached, Otto had held her mouth tight. Then she was fatally suffocated and Otto's mother had now received her human sacrifice.

In the meantime, strange things are happening in Fanny's house. She claims to have seen the ghost of the dead home manager in front of Brix's colleague and believes that he is still living in the house. Fanny seems obsessed with the ghost in the end and attacks Merle when Brix brings her to the house. While grappling with Merle's father, who was following them because he was eager to find the treasures his father hid there as a child, the mayor sets Fanny's house on fire to destroy this last evidence of his father's atrocities . With Brix's help, Fanny, Anna Jannekes and Merle get out into the open. Merle's father burns in the house because he does not want to give up the search for the alleged treasure.

Mayor Wilhelm Gerhard meanwhile also wants to kill his brother because he has to fear that his “weak” brother could betray him and the family. Friedrich Gerhard gets ahead of him and shoots him.

background

The film was shot near Frankfurt am Main from September 19, 2016 to October 28, 2016.

In an interview, Walter von Lucadou explained some film scenes from the perspective of parapsychology . Lucadou explains that people see deceased relatives, just as the dead woman Schlien appears to her son Otto as a ghost in the film, so that our brain replaces things that it has got used to when they are suddenly no longer there. Many people would think of an apparition from the afterlife when doing such a trick of the brain. The feeling of being possessed by a spiritual being, as in the film Ms. Schlien's ghost takes possession of Fanny, he interprets as a “reactive disorder” based on incorrect processing of information. He advises those affected by psychotherapy so that they can learn to regain possession of their own feelings.

Reviews

The crime scene received mixed reviews due to its "experimental nature" being both a crime thriller and a horror film:

"What has not been expected of the millions of 'Tatort' fans who just want to see a good crime thriller on Sundays in the past few months: […] Andy Fetscher's Frankfurt 'Tatort: Fear You' could now be the film at Many a long-established fan finally tears their patience: This family-incompatible Halloween article has hardly anything to do with a classic Sunday thriller. The sixth case of the Frankfurt commissioners is rather a real horror film, which after an exciting start in the final third completely loses its grip and is guaranteed to make the ARD complaint hotline glow. [...] In the final third of the film, the filmmakers shoot completely over the target. While Janneke and Brix are still grounded in reality and don't want to believe in the lazy magic, a ghost (!) Nests in Fanny's body. With the regular appearance of the supernatural being, the horror crime thriller finally loses its grip on the ground and says goodbye to the involuntary comedy with full steam. "

“Just as the set technicians work on the horror house with the flamethrower during advanced action, the eternal reality dictation of the 'crime scene' is tackled so rigorously on a narrative level. With all the fantastic elements, the filmmakers [...] succeed in telling a really touching, psychologically coherent story in 'Fear yourself', in which the curse of a crime affects three generations of a family. As the youngest representative of this family, the student Merle (perfect in the role of the laconically all dangers through horror heroine: Luise Befort) has to shoulder the concentrated horror almost alone. "

"[...] this episode is about as creepy as the Halloween tartlets with skull icing, which are seasonal in the bakers' windows. [...] And everything is to be expected for a horror film. Those who are used to The Walking Dead will at most scratch their heads with excitement at this number revue. When there's a thunderstorm, it looks a bit like it used to be at Graf Zahl's on Sesame Street , you're waiting for someone to start counting something. "
