The Monster of Kassel is a television film from the crime series Tatort . The by Hessian Radio Post produced the 1,094th episode scene and was on May 12, 2019 First erstgesendet. The Frankfurt investigator duo Janneke and Brix is investigating in its ninth case. The episode is one of the few in which the viewer knows the perpetrator from the start . The film draws parallels to cases in Strasbourg, Rheine and Kiel.

action

The chief inspectors Janneke and Brix are called to a gruesome find in Frankfurt: body parts packed in plastic bags. It quickly turns out that this is the 17-year-old stepson of popular TV talk master Maarten Jansen. The family lives in Kassel and reported Luke missing after he didn't return from a party in town. It is inexplicable to all how and why the young man was killed so cruelly. The perpetrator went to great lengths and left no trace. Even the real cause of death is not that easy to find out. The Frankfurt commissioners Janneke and Brix go to Kassel for an on-site investigation, where the remaining body parts have now been found and settle down in the local police headquarters. Here they work with Constanze Lauritzen, who has already compiled the most important facts of the case. There were similar unsolved cases only in Strasbourg and here the perpetrator was just caught, so that he is out of the question for the murder of Lukas Rohde. Investigators therefore initially focus on the family, which gives the appearance of relative harmony. When questioning Lukas' stepfather, Commissioner Janneke noticed a slightly exaggerated coolness on the part of Maarten Jansen. He does not renounce the broadcast of his next live program, which seems inappropriate in view of the circumstances, especially since he uses the program to offer the world his personal fate. Janneke thinks about that.

Abrasions on his knees suggest that Lukas must have fallen shortly before his death. Inspector Brix is therefore trying to reconstruct Lukas' way home from the party. He is sure that Lukas was out on his bike and drives the possible route. On a bridge he finds evidence of a fall and, on closer search, a man's bicycle in the bushes. This is examined by forensics and shows clear traces on the front wheel. Apparently the perpetrator overpowered Lukas here after he was brought down by a taut wire rope with his bicycle.

Commissioner Janneke learns from Max Rohde that his brother Lukas had been in an argument with his stepfather for about three weeks and that he had treated him very disrespectfully. The reason for this soon becomes clear, because Lukas found out that Maarten Jansen had cheated on his mother several times and is currently still doing so. He got his hands on love letters from his loved ones and hid them in the house, where the police are now finding them. The investigators investigate these clues and come across the young neighbor Therese. Luke had been in love with the girl and when he found out from her that his stepfather had raped her, but she hadn't reported this out of shame, he wanted to take justice into his own hands. He blackmailed Maarten Jansen, whereupon the latter came up with his diabolical plan.

Reviews

Christian Buß from Spiegel Online judged: “Frankfurt 'crime scenes' are usually strict in form, often visually stunning. The new episode by director Umut Dag […] is visually brilliant: the sun sets glowing red over a record-high heat in Kassel, and the long-awaited summer rain washes away the remains of corpses that are suitable for zombie films. Only the famous presenter's studio is squeaky given that he's supposed to be such a celebrated personality. It reminds a bit of the third program of the Hessischer Rundfunk, but usually no stars are produced there. Just like the backdrop, the plot also [...] looks a little threadbare in a few moments. "

At tittelbach.tv Thomas Gehringer evaluates: “The question of who the perpetrator was is not the focus of the 'Tatort' episode 'Das Monster von Kassel' (Degeto / HR), but why this crime happened. Everything in this dark and exciting crime drama revolves around the main character, the moderator Maarten Jansen (strong: Barry Atsma), in whom the media appearance and the true being are far apart. Although the audience is a significant step ahead of the commissioners, the production under the direction of Umut Dağ develops a considerable pull ... "

The Göttinger Tageblatt wrote: “'The Monster of Kassel' is a pessimistic soul trip, but surprisingly conventionally staged for a Frankfurt 'Tatort'. Nevertheless, doubts keep coming back while watching. "
