occupation

God is only human is a television film by Lars Jessen from the crime series Tatort . The report produced by WDR was broadcast on November 19, 2017 on Das Erste . In this 1036th crime scene episode, the Thiel and Boerne team in Münster is investigating its 32nd case.

action

Shortly before the opening of an international art exhibition in Münster, an alleged clown sculpture by the action artist GOD turns out to be a corpse in front of the town hall. The dead is a former city councilor who was accused of fornication with minors, but who was acquitted in court. During the autopsy, forensic doctor Boerne finds an SD card that contains evidence of the dead man's guilt. Therefore, the parents of the abused children are initially targeted by investigators Thiel and Krusenstern. In search of the murderer, however, the investigators soon find another artfully prepared body. Obviously an art-loving serial killer is at work. Now especially the action artists who reside in a hotel in Münster are under suspicion. For the culture enthusiast Boerne, this is the chance to get to know his great idol GOD in private. Boerne is fascinated by the extroverted action artist and even lets him teach him as a “master student”. When checking the suspects' alibis, Thiel reaches his limits when it comes to the wacky artists. The hotel in which they are accommodated is run by the siblings Klara and Roland Wenger, who help to organize the Münster art event. Klara knows Thiel from before and hopes that this circumstance will accelerate the clearance of the crime scenes and thus the opening of the exhibition.

Boerne tries to find connections between the victims. For example, a chain with a letter was found on both objects "converted" into art objects. These letters, consisting of "S" and "W", do not lead any further. The second victim, unlike the first, was a convicted felon. Both were shot, and the “works of art” depicted stood in stark contrast to the way of life of the victims. Although Boerne excludes GOD as a perpetrator, Thiel considers him to be the main suspect. But he has no means of taking him into custody. According to Boerne's analysis, your perpetrator would have to be someone who had a difficult childhood and low self-esteem, and that is not what GOD knows about.

It doesn't take long and a new sculpture is discovered. This time, the murderer did not manage to present his latest work in a media-effective manner because Thiel was right on his heels. Nevertheless he escapes undetected. This time his victim was an organic farmer who was accused of tax evasion. Boerne also finds a new letter: an "N", but no reference to GOD as the perpetrator. According to Krusenstern's research, the letters could designate the cardinal points, so it can be expected that there will be another victim. Thiel suspects the opening building of the exhibition to be the destination. While Thiel is securing the entrance area there, Boerne wants to look around in the basement of the hotel, as he suspects this is the place where the corpses were processed into works of art. His life is in danger because the perpetrator gave GOD, who has not lived long because of a brain tumor, the idea of leaving posterity with an ingenious work of art for which he too wants to “process” people. In addition to Boerne, GOD also brought Roland Wenger into his power, whom he found out to be the wanted murderer. In the meantime, Thiel has also found the trace of Wenger, whom he freed from GOD's captivity together with Boerne. Wenger had suffered from his abusive father all his life. After he died a few months ago, his “artistic” plans matured in Wenger. The fourth “sacrifice” he used was his father's ashes, which he had built into a self-designed Hau-den-Lukas figure.

Reviews

Christian Buß from Spiegel Online assessed: “What should we say? We surrender to this paper mache and plywood version of an art thriller that looks a bit as if they tried to re-shoot a film by Peter Greenaway on the ARD evening program, in which every scene is a reference to a great work of art. "

Katharina Riehl wrote in the Süddeutsche Zeitung : “Thiel and Boerne, even an art concept does not change that, have made every imaginable joke in the past 15 years, but strangely enough that has not harmed the audience, on the contrary. The more or less humorous contributions by Frank Thiel and Prof. Dr. Dr. Karl-Friedrich Boerne break all odds records reliably and without experimentation. It is therefore certainly very much in the interests of those responsible for ARD that the gag with the suitcase can only be seen at a time when nobody can switch. "

Tilmann P. Gangloff from tittelbach.tv said: “The title itself is brilliant, but this 'Tatort' from Münster finally fulfills the high expectations again: The story is original and witty, the dialogues are not like many other books for the duo Thiel & Boerne brushed with punctuation. Unlike in his last Münster episode, director Lars Jessen has balanced crime and comedy much better. He has completely dispensed with the otherwise popular slapstick elements, Boerne's obligatory malice is reduced to casual bon mots. There are some amusing swipes at the vain art business, but the story is always in the foreground. "

Julian Miller Quotenmeter.de wrote: "One can make allowances' the Münster, the scene that he knows what he is: that he understands clearly as comedic format and some ludicrousness of the characters says it all. A serious encounter with the subject of art is therefore not wanted at all, "
