Teiuş [ te.'juʃ ] ( Hungarian Tövis = Dorn, German Dreikirchen , Dornstadt , Dornen) is a Romanian city in the Alba district in Transylvania .
Geographical location
The small town of Teiuș is located east of the Trascău Mountains in western Transylvania. On the lower reaches of the Geoagiu (also called Stremț ) - a right tributary of the Mureș ( Mieresch ) - on the Teiuș – Vințu de Jos railway line and on the European route 81 , the place is 16 kilometers north of the district capital Alba Iulia ( Karlsburg ) .
history
Teiuș was founded in 1296 and has several churches: a Roman Catholic from 1449, which was built for Johann Hunyadi and rebuilt in Gothic style in 1701–1704, and a church of the Uniate Catholic community from the 17th century.
population
In 1850, 2935 inhabitants lived in the area of Teiuș. 2084 of them were Romanians , 586 Hungarians , 102 Roma , 23 Romanian Germans . 1977 the largest population was registered with 7718 and also that of the Romanians (6623). The highest number of Hungarians (1720) was determined in 1910, that of Germans (133) in 1890 and that of Roma (567) in 2002. Since the survey in 1880, Serbs (two in 1930; one each in 1977 and 1992), Ukrainians (one each in 1910 and 1977) and Slovaks (highest number 21 in 1900) were recorded in the area of Teiuș . In 2002, 7,284 people lived in the Teiuș area. 6297 were Romanians, 567 were Roma, 414 were Hungarians and five were Germans.

Teiuș is of great importance for the Romanian Railway ( CFR ) because it forms an important connection point for the line from Cluj-Napoca ( Klausenburg ) or Arad via Sighișoara ( Schäßburg ) to Brașov ( Kronstadt ), then to Ploieşti and Bucharest .
