Tema is the most important port city in the West African state of Ghana . It is located about 25 km east of the capital Accra , with which it is connected by a railway line and developed roads. Tema belongs to the Greater Accra region , an urban agglomeration that stretches 100 kilometers along the coast as a continuous development and extends up to 30 kilometers inland. The information on the number of inhabitants fluctuates greatly.

history

Until 1960 Tema was a small fishing village near the Ghanaian capital Accra . The name "Tema" is said to come from the Ga language . The Ga word "gate" means something like "pumpkin" and "Torman" means something like "pumpkin place". The name refers to the pumpkins that grew here and were used to transport water. The British then corrupted this name to "Tema".

A study published in the 1940s under British rule at the time of the Gold Coast colony came to the conclusion that a port near Accra was necessary in addition to the planned Volta Dam. In the 1950s, planning for the construction of the port at Tema began. In 1961 the sea port was opened, replacing the port of Takoradi as the largest in the country. Like the Volta River Project , the best-known sub-project of which is the construction of the Akosombo Dam , Tema is one of the major development projects in Ghana after gaining independence. Due to the extensive infrastructure projects in the area, the Ghana's government decided to build an adjacent city, which was carried out by the architect and city planner Konstantinos A. Doxiadis .

Economical meaning

Tema is the largest deep water port in Ghana. Most of the cocoa , the country's main export product alongside gold , is shipped via Tema. The port is to be expanded further by 2018. In addition, important industrial companies have settled here, z. Due to the fact that the city was rebuilt, as well as its importance as an industrial and port city, the inhabitants of Tema are ethnically diverse. In addition to 23% Ga live there about as many Ewe , whose settlement area adjoins to the east. The various Akan peoples ( Ashanti , Fante , Akwapim ) make up another 40%.

climate

The area around Tema is the driest part of southern Afghanistan. There is a dry equatorial climate with an average rainfall of approx. 790 mm per year.

Social infrastructure

Tema is a planned city . This history is today z. It can be recognized, for example, by the fact that Tema is the only major Ghanaian city with a closed sewer system (in contrast to the usual open sewer ditches, e.g. in the much larger Accra). Around 80% of the residents have access to running water, and around the same number of settlements and neighborhoods in the Tema district are connected to the electrical power supply. In some parts there is a functioning private garbage disposal.

District of Tema

The district of Tema (the "Tema Municipality") consists of the main town Tema, which in turn is divided into several districts, as well as Adenta East, Bethelehem, Ashaiman, Ashaley Botwe, Kakasunanka II, Kpone, Lashibi and Ogbojo.
