The indoor tennis world championships ( english World Covered Court Championships ) was a tennis tournament, which were held from 1913 to 1923 in various European cities.

history

In 1913 with the founding of the International Tennis Federation decided to introduce three world championships in tennis: the lawn World Championships ( Wimbledon Championships ), the World Hard Court Championships (in Paris , forerunner of the French Open ) and the World Indoor Championships. The American tennis association USNLTA did not want to accept that this would make its US championships a second-rate tournament and therefore declined to join the ITF.

In the period that followed, the World Indoor Championships were held in various European cities, interrupted by the First World War . As was common in the hall at that time, the surface of the square was a wooden floor. In 1923, when the USA joined the ITF, the system of three world championships was dropped and instead the championships of England (Wimbledon Championships), France, Australia and the USA were elevated to the rank of top championships. The indoor championships have been discontinued.
