The Thalassa is a research vessel that works for the French marine research institute Ifremer . It is managed by Genavir. The ship is primarily used for fisheries research and oceanographic research.
Construction and technical data
The ship was built under the construction number 620 by the MIM Dieppe shipyard (Manche Industrie Marine) in Dieppe and was completed in early May 1996.
The ship is powered by diesel-electric technology . The output of the Alstom drive motor is 2,200 kW . It acts on a fixed propeller with a Becker rudder and accelerates the ship to 14.5 knots . The electricity for the electric motor is generated by four twelve - cylinder four - stroke diesel engines from the manufacturer MWM - Deutz (type: TBD 604 BV 12), each with an output of 1128 kW. The motors drive four generators , each with an output of 1,000 kW (1,250 kVA apparent power ).
The ship has a bow and stern thruster . The bow thruster has 440 kW, the stern thruster 264 kW.
The hull of the ship is reinforced with ice .
Furnishing
The ship is equipped with various systems required for the research work, including echo sounders , sonar , thermosalinograph and bathythermograph . From the research ship can u. a. the remote-controlled diving vehicle Victor 6000 can be used. The ship is equipped with a dynamic positioning system.
Several rooms are available for research, including four laboratories (hydrology, physics, chemistry and biology) and other scientific rooms. There are spaces on board for five 20-foot containers .
The ship has several cranes, including a crane located on the port side on the quarterdeck, a crane system approximately amidships on the starboard side and a crane on the forecastle . There is a stern boom at the stern of the ship . There are also various winches on deck .
In addition to the crew, there is space on board for 25 scientists and other personnel required for research trips.
