Most CDs are compilations with the help of which an attempt was made to document the life's work of a particular musician or individual sections of it. Some CDs are samplers that introduce a particular style of blues (as in issues 41 Memphis Jug Bands and 73 Blues Women ). Few issues in the series are re-releases of albums (e.g. issue 7 London Sessions ). The special edition The Blues at Christmas, The Very Best of the Blues, on the other hand, is a sampler with 17 recordings by various musicians.

The leaflets in the format 292 × 215 mm were paginated throughout , whereby the cover pages were not counted. The last edition (75) has 28 pages due to an index, so that a total of 912 pages (with cover pages 1212) to book. The special edition The Blues at Christmas, The Very Best of the Blues has 24 pages. The booklets consistently contain information about the life and work of the artists, recommendations for further publications (discography) and information about the recordings. The booklet is supplemented with the heading “The Story of the Blues”, a historical account of the blues. The collection's expert advisor was Tony Russel, a writer and journalist from London.
