The Chase is a British quiz show broadcastby ITV andhostedby Bradley Walsh . The German program asked - hunted is an adaptation of the format.

Here the candidates compete against professional quizers, called chasers , called hunters in the German edition. The current six chasers are Mark Labbett, Shaun Wallace, Anne Hegerty, Paul Sinha, Jenny Ryan and Darragh Ennis.

A team of four candidates initially tries to earn as much money as possible individually. They try to defend this in a single duel against a chaser. Each candidate can choose whether he wants to defend the amount won, a higher or a lower amount. In the final round, the team must jointly defend the amount against the hunter.

The average audience for The Chase is between 3 and 5 million. This makes it the most successful daily show to date. She has been nominated six times for the National Television Awards . In 2016, 2017 and 2019 she won the award. Offshoots of the program were or are now being broadcast in Australia, China, Croatia, Finland, the USA, Germany, Israel, Norway, Russia, Serbia, Turkey and Spain.

Game flow

Cash builders and head-to-head rounds

Each participant first competes individually and tries to collect money in two rounds. In the first round, referred to in the German edition as the quick guess round, the participant answers as many questions as possible within a minute, with each correct answer worth 1000 GBP. Then the hunter enters the stage and makes three offers to the candidate. The candidate chooses one of these:

  • The first offer corresponds to the profit from the Cash Builder round and the candidate has a lead of three questions.
  • In the case of the second offer, the candidate receives a lead of four questions. For this, the amount from the cash builder round is reduced. The amount is partly negative.
  • With the third offer, the candidate only gets a lead of two questions. However, its possible profit is increased.

Once the starting position is selected, the moderator asks the participant and the chaser a series of multiple choice questions. Here you choose the correct answer from three options using the keyboard at the same time. After one person has chosen the answer, the other has a maximum of five seconds. With a correct answer, the person who gave it moves a step down, while an incorrect or late answer leaves him at the level where they were before the question.

If the participant arrives successfully, i.e. without being caught, he can take part in the final chase and his money will be credited to the team jackpot (in the case of a negative amount then deducted accordingly). Should the candidate be caught, he will be eliminated and his amount will be forfeited. If all four entrants are eliminated, they will choose one to play for the minimum amount of £ 1000 alone.

Final chase

The candidates choose one of two sets of questions. The other is played by the hunter. You are now trying to answer as many questions as possible correctly within two minutes. If more than one candidate is playing, the players must operate the buzzer before answering. For each player who has reached the final, the candidates receive one point as a lead.

The hunter then has two minutes to answer questions from the unused sentence and to catch up with the team. If the chaser fails to answer a question or answers incorrectly, the clock is stopped. The team can then answer the question and reset the hunter for one answer. If the candidates are not caught, the profit will be divided equally among the finalists.

For celebrity issues, each celebrity who loses a final will receive £ 1000 for their supported project.

Production process

Three episodes are shot in one day. An episode is produced in about 90 minutes. In the final chase, if Walsh gets confused with a question, the question and answer session can be stopped and then restarted. At Radio Times , Walsh said that even slight misinterpretations by lawyers would be stopped. You use the recording to determine when to restart.

Chaser / hunter

  • Mark Labbett (since 2009) known from University Challenge , Fifteen to One , The Syndicate and Who Wants to Be a Millionaire ? , Runner-up at The People's Quiz , runner-up at Brain of Britain , member of the winning team at Only Connect , represented Wales at the European Quiz Championships from 2005 to 2007. Nicknames are "The Beast", "Beastie Boy", "The Man Mountain of Maths" and "The Transatlantic Giant". He reached 152nd place at the World Quizzing Championships 2019. He was the only chaser in the US edition of The Chase and one of six chasers in the Australian edition.
  • Shaun Wallace (since 2009), known from Fifteen to One , Weakest Link , Beat the Nation , BrainTeaser , Greed The Waiting Game ; Winner at Mastermind , Finalist in the first season of Are You an Egghead? . Nicknames are "The Dark Destroyer" , "Grumpy Drawers", "The Barrister", "The Legal Eagle" and "The Mastermind Champ". He reached rank 455 at the World Quizzing Championships 2014. In 2018 he was a guest chaser in the Australian edition.
  • Anne Hegerty (since 2010), known from Mastermind (twice), Fifteen to One , Today's the Day and Brain of Britain ; Semi-finalist in the second season of Are You an Egghead ? It reached rank 18 in the UK quiz rankings (January 2018). Nicknames are "The Governess" and "Frosty Knickers". She reached 122nd place at the World Quizzing Championships 2019. She is one of six chasers in the Australian edition.
  • Paul Sinha (since 2011), known from Are You an Egghead? , Brain of Britain , Mastermind , University Challenge and The Weakest Link ; It reached number 6 in the National Quiz Rankings (January 2018). Nicknames are "The Sinnerman" , "The Smiling Assassin" and "Sarcasm in a Suit". He reached 11th place at the World Quizzing Championships 2018. Sinha is also a stand-up comedian and worked as a doctor.
  • Jenny Ryan (since 2015), known from University Challenge , Mastermind , Are You an Egghead? , Fifteen to One , The Weakest Link , The X Factor and was part of the winning team at Only Connect . Nicknames are "The Vixen" , "The Bolton Brainiac", "Bolton Bombshell" and "The Brainiac of Bolton". She reached rank 175 at the World Quizzing Championships 2014.
  • Darragh Ennis (since 2020), was a candidate for The Chase in 2017 and is a postdoc at Oxford University .

Spin-offs

One spin-off is called The Chase: Celebrity Special. Celebrities compete here. Often it is comedians or actors, which leads to increased comedy elements. The gameplay is identical to the regular editions. If all four celebs are eliminated, the final winnings will be £ 20,000 (originally £ 4000). If the team loses in the Final Chase, each celebrity will receive a consolation prize of £ 1000 to charity.

In February 2017 ITV commissioned the spin-off The Family Chase. All candidates come from the same family. The first season with 6 episodes has aired since September 2, 2017. The second season with 8 episodes followed in March 2019.

In November 2019 ITV commissioned a second spin-off, Beat The Chasers . It was broadcast in prime time on April 27, 2020. Here the candidate must prevail against up to five pursuers.

All five chasers took part in the 1000th episode on September 29, 2016. Here, a different hunter competed against each of the candidates and the fifth in the final. This format was also used for the Christmas Promi special.

Extra expenses

Special episodes were produced for the program's YouTube channel, which were broadcast on weekdays at 6:00 p.m. Each season had 5 episodes. Here the spectators were the candidates. The first season hosted Jenny Ryan and the current Shaun Wallace.

International broadcasts

  • AustraliaAustralia Australia : Episodes of the UK edition airs on Seven Network at 3pm on weekdays . At times, the station planned its own edition of the show and shot a pilot episode on the British set. In mid-2015, a local version was commissioned to replace Deal or No Deal and Million Dollar Minute to revive the 6 p.m. news. Hegerty and Labbet are permanent chasers while Wallace was a guest hunter in 2018.
  • New ZealandNew Zealand New Zealand : Episodes of the UK version will air Monday through Saturday at 4:55 pm on TVNZ 1. Reruns are broadcast at 11 a.m. Monday through Friday. The broadcast attracts an average of 1.3 million per week.

Critic reactions

Bradley Walsh, host of the show

The Chase is now popular with critics and viewers. The ratings of the show were even more critical at first, but later they rose steadily. Some critics and the chasers themselves attribute the success to the presenter Bradley Walsh. Labbett said that the sense of humor and the diversity of the chasers is an important factor for success.

Controversy

The Chase has been the center of controversy on several occasions. Viewers have complained that Walsh reads the questions in the final more slowly with the candidates than with the hunters. In an interview with Radio Times , he denied these claims.

Viewership and competition with pointless

During the first two seasons, the show was seen by an average of 1-2 million viewers. In the third season there were already over 2 million. In December 2012, The Chase was the most popular tea time show since The Paul O'Grady Show in 2005, with over 3 million viewers . On January 21, 2013, it reached its all-time high of 5.1 million. Since then, almost every episode has been in the top 30 weekly ITV shows.

At the same time as The Chase airs on BBC One Pointless , a game show that started in August 2009, two months after The Chase . The two shows usually have similar audience numbers.

A board game based on the show was released by Ideal in 2012. In 2013 Ginger Fox released a card game.

On December 12, 2012, Barnstrom Games released an iOS app. It contains four hunters and can be played by up to four players. The only difference is that possible answers are always given. The updated version, The Chase: Ultimate Edition , was released in 2017.
