In demand - hunted is a quiz show developed by ITV in the UK in 2009 under the name The Chase (Eng .: "The Hunt") , in which a team of candidates against the "Häger" ("Chaser"), a professional quiz player, occurs. In the first rounds, the candidates individually build up a joint sum that they have to defend against the hunter in the final (“Final Chase”). If this succeeds, they can share the winnings.

In Germany , the broadcast , moderated by Alexander Bommes , began in July 2012 on NDR . Since May 2015 it changes in the early evening of the first echelon with the program quiz duel , who knows a thing like that? and couple duel .

The broadcast will be recorded in the studio complex of Studio Hamburg GmbH in Hamburg-Tonndorf .

Game flow

Before the quick guessing round starts, the presenter opens each program with the words: “These four candidates have come to us tonight and they are about to compete as a team to win a lot of money. Problem: a man stands in their way mercilessly, the hunter! ”. Then the candidates pose after the sentence: “Hello and welcome to asked - hunted! Today again we have four brave candidates who all believe they can defeat a hunter. Why do you think so? We will ask them directly ourselves. ”Shortly before.

Quick installment round ("Cash Builder")

In the money-building round, each candidate alone answers as many questions as possible for one minute. For each correct answer, he is credited with 500 euros (previously 200 euros) - so-called “cash builders”. The UK version is £ 1000, the Australian $ 2000 and the US $ 5000 per question. If a candidate does not give a single correct answer in the quick guessing round, according to the rules, he will be given an amount of 500 euros for the upcoming duel against the hunter, which will be deducted at the end if he is successful.

Single duel against the hunter ("Chase")

After the quick guessing round, the respective hunter is asked into the studio with the sentence “Here comes the hunter!”. The candidate must now defend his previously built capital against the hunter in a single duel. In this round, questions with three possible answers (A, B, C) are asked, only one of which is correct. The candidates are placed on a playing field, similar to a ladder, which comprises seven fields, in the fifth position from the bottom and thus have a lead of three fields over the hunter, who starts directly above the top position. As soon as one of the players (the hunter or the candidate) has chosen an answer, the other has five seconds, after which the question is considered unsuccessful. If the answer is correct, the corresponding game party moves one space down, whereby the candidate always moves first, then the hunter. The aim of the player is to be the first to leave the field below. If he is caught by the hunter beforehand, he is eliminated and his capital is forfeited.

Before the start of the round, the hunter makes two offers to the respective player: He can multiply his sum (for example from 5000 to 30,000 euros) by starting one field higher (i.e. reducing his lead), or conversely, play with less capital and increase his lead. The hunters are free to choose the amounts offered within a framework set by the editorial team of the show. In addition to whole euro amounts (e.g. 500 euros), crooked amounts (e.g. 0.99 euros) or, since the sixth season, negative amounts (e.g. −1000 euros) are permitted, which then apply to the total game sum of the team. After an offer has been selected or both have been rejected, the hunt begins with the sentence “The hunt begins!”.

Finale ("Final Chase")

Here the entire team defends the game sum accumulated in the individual duels against the hunter. First, the team gets a lead of one point per remaining candidate, i.e. a maximum of four, and then has to answer as many questions as possible for two minutes, with one point for each correct answer. If nobody wants to answer, someone has to say “continue” as quickly as possible. If no one was able to qualify for the final in the individual duel, the four candidates have to agree on a representative who competes against the hunter in this round.

The hunter then tries to get the number of points achieved by the team in two minutes, again with quick questions, but starts at zero without a lead. If the answer is wrong or a match, the clock is stopped with the sentence “Stop the clock!” And the challengers have the opportunity to answer the question. If your answer is correct, the hunter loses one point; if it is at zero points at this point, another point is credited to the candidates. If the hunter reaches the team's number of points within two minutes, the team loses the entire winnings, otherwise the team wins.

The prize will be shared among the finalists. The rules of the game provide for an equal distribution, but the candidates can also agree on a different distribution. In the case of special editions with prominent candidates, the finalists will each receive 500 euros for a good cause of their choice in the event of a defeat.

The presenter ends each program with the sentence "We look forward to the next time when the hunt starts again!"

The hunters

There are several recurring "hunters", each one of which does an entire show. The hunters receive a fixed fee for each of their appearances. Each hunter has a certain "battle name" and a similar outfit in each broadcast. Before the first individual duel, the hunters are briefly introduced to the candidates and the audience by the moderator with an ironic comment. Which hunter is used in the respective program is not known to either the audience or the candidates until their first appearance. Since 2018, only three hunters have been presented per episode, in changing combinations.

The current hunters at Asked - Hunted :

Former hunters:

  • Grażyna Werner , "The Governess"; irregular from January to April 2017
  • Holger Waldenberger , “The Giant” (2012 “The Quiz Machine”); 2012, from May 2015 to April 2017

Waldenberger, Klussmann, Jacoby, Nagorsnik and Hobiger are among the top players of the German Quiz Association (DQV), founded in 2011 and chaired by Klussmann. In the overall ranking for the DQV's Germany Cup , the five finished in 1st, 2nd, 4th, 5th and 6th place in 2016, while Grażyna Werner achieved 85th place.

The appearance of the huntress Grażyna Werner and her battle name Gouvernante were based on Anne Hegerty, who appeared in the British edition The Chase as "The Governess".

Grażyna Werner, Manuel Hobiger and Thomas Kinne were once candidates for the show. Werner earned 4,000 euros in the quick guess round in the November 6, 2015 issue. In the final, she contributed one of the 15 points, which was not enough to win against Klaus Otto Nagorsnik. Manuel Hobiger and his team earned 27,500 euros in the program on April 4, 2017 after beating Klaus Otto Nagorsnik. Thomas Kinne, who had won 6000 euros in the quick guess round, won in the broadcast on June 24, 2015 with his team 37,500 euros in the game against Sebastian Jacoby.

Sebastian Jacoby, Manuel Hobiger, Holger Waldenberger and Thomas Kinne were also winners of the ZDF series Der Quiz-Champion : Jacoby on April 21, 2012, Hobiger on August 25, 2012 (both under the title Super-Champion ), Waldenberger on November 5, 2016 (special edition with former finalists after failure in October 2014) and Kinne on April 29, 2017.

From 2012 to 2015, NDR television broadcast 32 episodes in three production seasons. The first season ran from July 2012 to August 2012 with six episodes on Sundays at 10:30 p.m. In June and July 2013, a second season followed with eight episodes, this time the episodes were broadcast weekly mostly on Mondays at 10:00 p.m. and sometimes on Saturdays. On August 2, 2014, the third season of the program began with a 90-minute “XXL” edition, with a total of 19 additional episodes being broadcast between August 2014 and February 2015. These were initially mostly broadcast on Saturdays and, from the end of 2014 onwards, usually on Sundays at different times between 10:00 p.m. and 12:00 a.m.

Due to the high ratings on NDR television, the show was continued from May 18 to July 3, 2015 with a fourth season of 33 episodes, Monday to Friday at 6:00 p.m. on the first . In contrast to the previous seasons broadcast on NDR, in which most of the candidates were celebrities, this season celebrities only appeared on Fridays. From November 2, 2015 to February 19, 2016, the fifth season was broadcast every week at around 6 p.m. on ARD. The celebrity special took place on Thursdays. A double episode was broadcast on Fridays. On January 7, 2016, an "XXL" episode with a length of 93 minutes was shown at 8:15 pm. In this edition, eight prominent candidates competed in four teams of two. From March 7th to June 29th, 2016 Das Erste repeated the fifth season Monday to Friday at 10:45 a.m. In addition, repeats of this season could be seen between June 5 and December 2, 2016 on all third programs with the exception of SWR at different broadcast times.

The sixth season began broadcasting on October 7, 2016. The first eight episodes of this season were initially broadcast on Fridays at 6:50 p.m. In these episodes, former unsuccessful candidates whose first appearance had something in common (e.g. all lost to the same hunter, all more than 5000 or 6000 euros in the fast guessing round, etc.) competed. Since December 2, 2016, the program has been broadcast from Monday to Friday at 6 p.m., and from March 24, 2017 on Fridays again in double episodes. On March 4, 2017, at 8:15 p.m., another XXL edition with a length of 190 minutes was broadcast, in which four teams of celebrities from the fields of drama , music , sports and comedy each competed against one of the four regulars. After a total of 99 episodes, the season ended on April 20, 2017. From February 14, 2017 to July 12, 2017, the first repeated the entire sixth season from Monday to Friday from 11:15 am, some episodes from July 17 to September 4, 2017 mostly on weekdays at 4:10 p.m. From April 27, 2017 to March 17, 2018, there were repeated repetitions of the fifth and sixth seasons as well as occasional older editions on all third programs.

The beginning of 2018 began broadcasting the seventh season, the fourth ARD season. From January 2nd to 5th, four special editions, in which four people from a family compete against a hunter, were broadcast on Das Erste at 9:45 p.m. An ordinary issue was broadcast unscheduled on January 8th at 6:50 pm. The broadcast of a further 98 episodes of this season began on April 23, 2018 at the regular broadcast date Monday to Friday at 6 p.m. and lasted until September 28, 2018. On August 18, 2018, another full-length "XXL" edition with four prominent candidate teams was shown . Repetitions of episodes of this and the previous season were shown between April 3 and October 10, 2018 at 11:15 am on Das Erste. From September 16, 2018 to June 8, 2019, repeats of the second to fourth ARD season ran on all third programs ( only the XXL edition from 2018 in the hr ).

The eighth season in total, the fifth on ARD, was broadcast again from June 18, 2019 to September 26, 2019 at 6 p.m. Monday to Friday on the first. An additional episode was broadcast on Fridays at 6:50 p.m. Furthermore, on Saturday, June 22nd, due to a short summer break from the sports show, an episode was broadcast around 7 p.m. On July 20, 2019, another "XXL" edition could be seen in the main evening program. At the same time, repeats were shown again in the first, Monday to Friday at 11:15 a.m. from June 18 to September 27, 2019 - first the fourth, then the current ARD season with a 5-week delay from the first broadcast. During the regular broadcasting time of the fifth season in the first, 87 episodes were broadcast, the first broadcast of a further episode, which was canceled due to a sports broadcast on ARD, took place on October 8, 2019 on BR television . The ARD premiere of this episode and another previously not broadcast took place on Saturday, January 4th, 2020. Between September 29, 2019 and April 30, 2020, the episodes of this and the previous season were repeated on most of the third programs; episodes of the second and third season were also broadcast on SWR, and only some of the third ARD season on hr. Only the XXL edition from 2019 was shown on WDR.

The ninth and sixth ARD season started on April 18, 2020 with a “quiz marathon” in the main evening program. In contrast to previous special editions broadcast on Saturday evenings, this time twelve non-prominent candidates ran. The program was instead of an episode of Who knows something not produced due to the COVID-19 pandemic ? set at short notice and consisted of three combined issues, each cut to a duration of just under an hour instead of the usual 45 minutes. The regular episodes of the new season have been broadcast Monday to Friday at 6 p.m. on Das Erste since May 4, 2020. About 90 episodes are planned. Repetitions of this season can be seen since May 19, 2020 on weekdays at 11:15 a.m. on Das Erste. Due to COVID-19-related production backlogs, repeats of the fourth and fifth ARD seasons were shown at 6 p.m. from June 15 to July 10, 2020. With a corresponding delay, these can also be seen on the repeat date at 11:15 a.m. The current season continued on July 13, 2020. On July 18th, a new XXL edition with four prominent candidate teams was broadcast. Episodes recorded without an audience due to the COVID-19 pandemic have been broadcast since June 5, 2020. Since June 10, most editions have had acrylic glass partitions on the candidate's desk, and since July 16, also between the moderator and the respective candidate.

In the period under review, Sebastian Jacoby and Holger Waldenberger were the most successful hunters in the final rounds of the show: both were able to win 80 percent of their finals. Third place is occupied by Manuel Hobiger with 70 percent. The average win rate of the hunters is 72 percent, so the candidates were only able to prevail in the final in 28 percent of the cases.

In the individual duels against the candidates, Manuel Hobiger has so far been the most successful; he was able to prevent 56 percent of the candidates from reaching the final. Most of the other hunters achieved victory rates of around 45 percent in their duels. On average, 54 percent of the candidates made it to the final. A particularly large number of candidates were able to win their duels against Grażyna Werner (80 percent) and Thomas Kinne (64 percent).

In total, the candidates won almost 3 million euros in the period under review. So far, the least money has been won against Sebastian Jacoby, with an average of 4,193 euros per appearance. Klaus Otto Nagorsnik gave the candidates the second-smallest average winnings with 5,456 euros per appearance. Most of the money was won against Grażyna Werner, at 16,700 euros per performance. Holger Waldenberger seldom lost the final rounds, but with some of his defeats the candidates won large sums of money, so that he “played” the second most money with 10,203 euros per appearance. Of the still active hunters, Sebastian Klussmann has the highest value at 8,040 euros per appearance.

Holger Waldenberger proved to be the fastest hunter with an average value of 19.4 correct answers per 2 minutes, closely followed by Sebastian Jacoby with 19.2. Third place is occupied by Manuel Hobiger with 17.6.

Despite the fast response speed, Holger Waldenberger also achieved the best value of only 1.05 setbacks per appearance on average. Most other hunters are slightly above the overall average of 1.63 setbacks per appearance in this regard.

Trivia

Personnel

  • Some of the participants in asked - hunted had previously become known as candidates for other television shows. Ralf Schnoor (in 2010 winner of one million euros at Who Wants to Be a Millionaire? ) Was one of the participants in the first edition played with non-prominent candidates, which was broadcast on July 8, 2013. Olufemi Smith (2008 winner of 2.5 million euros at Schlag den Raab ) took part in the show on February 2, 2017, and Michael Marji, who appeared in the show on January 5, 2015, won the sum of 118,000 euros in 2016 at 500 - The Quiz Arena .
  • In the April 20, 2017 issue, the last of the sixth season, Holger Waldenberger announced that he would probably stop as a hunter. He therefore refrained from wearing a tie in this issue.
  • The hunter Sebastian Klussmann drew attention to himself, especially in the fourth and fifth seasons of the ARD, by constantly wearing eye-catching flower shirts. In the August 9, 2019 issue, he appeared with a yellow rose in his mouth that he gave to the first candidate after she had previously complimented him. On September 26, 2019, he performed in floral shorts instead of a floral shirt and climbed onto his chair twice to present them. He describes flowers of all things as a personal knowledge gap. In the May 27, 2020 edition, Klussmann appeared in the first duel in a trench coat .
  • In the editions broadcast between May 4 and June 4, 2020, the hunter Klaus Otto Nagorsnik entered the studio with two walking sticks due to an adductor irritation in his thigh; on May 4th he stayed in his seat between the duels.
  • In the XXL edition of July 18, 2020, the hunters Klaus Otto Nagorsnik and Manuel Hobiger as well as Sebastian Klussmann and Sebastian Jacoby appeared in each other's typical costume, although Klussmann did not appear at the presentation of the hunters before his round.

Controversial questions or answers

  • In the broadcast on March 20, 2017, the final candidate answered the wrongly answered question by Klaus Otto Nagorsnik "Which South American first wife was officially buried 24 years after her death?" With Evita Perón - the nickname by which his wife Juan Peróns became world-famous was. The answer was not counted as her real name Eva Perón was expected. Although ultimately meaningless for the outcome of the program, Alexander Bommes apologized at the beginning of the following issue for the point that was not given.
  • In the XXL edition of July 20, 2019, the question was asked which federal minister was the daughter of a former prime minister. We were looking for Ursula von der Leyen , daughter of Ernst Albrecht . At the time of the broadcast, however, von der Leyen had not been a minister for four days, as she had meanwhile been elected EU Commission President and resigned from her position as Minister of Defense . In the course of the broadcast, another question was asked in which von der Leyen was named minister. As the hunter Thomas Kinne then announced on Facebook, the recording took place at the end of June, when the switch from der Leyens to European politics was not yet in sight.
  • In the final edition of 371, 28 August 2019 Klaus Otto Nagorsnik got the question "Which Peter says the children's book, And the mother? 'Can wander in silence on the whole table around" found. Nagorsnik answered the question with "Fidget-Philipp", which was considered a wrong answer. The following answer from the candidates “Struwwelpeter” was rated as correct and Nagorsnik was set back by one point. However, the quote, even if it comes from Struwwelpeter, does in fact refer to the figure of Fidget-Philipp there . The editors of the show therefore apologized on Twitter for the incorrect point. Since Nagorsnik won anyway, the incident had no impact on the outcome of the show.
  • In issue 393 of September 23, 2019, a defeat of the candidates was retrospectively converted into a victory for the first time. After Klaus Otto Nagorsnik answered the question of who had become German champions and cup winners as a football player and coach, the two final candidates named Jupp Heynckes . In the show itself, Niko Kovač was the only correct answer, so Nagorsnik was not set back by one point. He won the final two seconds before time ran out. However, since Heynckes was indeed able to win both titles as player and coach ( a third possible answer with Thomas Schaaf would also have been correct), the victory was retrospectively recognized and the prize money of 5,000 euros was paid out to the candidates.
  • In the broadcast on June 10, 2020, Thomas Kinne answered the question of which animal male representative was a boar with " wild boar " in the final . However, only the " pig " would have been correct , since male wild boars are called wild boars. However, this was irrelevant for the outcome of the show, as the candidates won anyway.

Entertaining and statistically special

To loosen up the show, jokes have been regularly incorporated by the presenter and the hunters, especially since the sixth season. Above all, this includes feigned hostility between the moderator and the hunters.

  • In the XXL edition of March 4, 2017, the four regular hunters sang a song entitled Die Nervensäge Bommes to the melody of My Little Green Cactus . In the XXL edition of August 18, 2018, Bommes took revenge on the hunters by singing a medley to the tunes of Flieger, Greetings to the Sun , Gross National Product , Tell me where the flowers are and Beautiful Stranger Man sang. The songs parodied Jacoby, Klussmann and Nagorsnik. These appearances represent a joking counter-action to the short vocal interludes of the presenter, which often occur in the sixth season - especially with regard to music issues - which the hunters do not seem to like.
  • In the edition of July 30, 2018, before the first individual duel, Klaus Otto Nagorsnik first stepped into the corridor to the hunter's desk. But he was overtaken and displaced by Sebastian Klussmann. In the edition of May 28, 2020, Sebastian Jacoby stopped behind the entrance to the Jäger chair before the fourth individual duel after the warm-up music. After a short imitation by the presenter Bommes and repeated running-in music, he appeared regularly.
  • In the week from February 6 to 10, 2017, the hunters could not win the final rounds in five consecutive broadcasts; each of the five hunters lost once.
  • As a result of May 31, 2018, a candidate accepted a negative offer for the first time (in the specific case −1000 euros) and made it to the final, whereupon the "won" money was deducted from the previously earned money.
  • In episode 368 of August 23, 2019, moderator Alexander Bommes read the answer to the question in addition to the question. A unprecedented faux pas; the point was given to the candidate anyway.
  • When the last candidate in issue 392 on September 20, 2019 was offered 60,000 euros, “Gamble, gamble !!!” was displayed on the screens. However, the candidate asked for 100,000 euros. The offer was then actually increased to 100,000 euros. There had never been a change in the offer before in the show. The candidate stayed with his 2000 euros earned in the preliminary round.
  • In the May 7, 2020 edition, Sebastian Jacoby appeared for the first time, a hunter who was not one of the three listed in the preview of this episode. Sebastian Klussmann did the same in the August 14, 2020 issue.
  • In the June 4, 2020 issue, the fourth candidate described the 20,000 euros he was offered as ridiculously low. The editorial team then cut the offer in half to 10,000 euros.

In other media

  • During the filming of the fifth ARD season in early 2019, Alexander Bommes was the "victim" of the entertainment program Do you understand fun? . Both the director and the candidates (already decoys in Understanding you have fun? ) And Jäger Jacoby were involved. On the manipulated desk, screen malfunctions occurred in the first round as soon as Bommes touched it. The second candidate had been provided with the questions and answers in advance, came to the regular, never-before-reached sum of 8,000 euros in the quick guessing round and “won” the risk variant 75,000 euros, with emphatically difficult questions being asked. The third candidate was very aggressive and arrogant at the beginning, so that he verbally attacked the question author and Jacoby after an allegedly wrong answer in a rage. Jacoby also countered verbally. Furthermore, this candidate (he was portrayed as a surgeon) confirmed Jacoby's diagnosis of an allegedly serious illness in Bommes. When the hunter appeared again, moderator Guido Cantz appeared and released his colleague.
  • In Death Mark , the fifth volume in his series about Sabine Nemez and Maarten S. Sneijder, the Austrian writer Andreas Gruber lets an old professor appear who keeps watching the same sequence of Asked - Chased on a video cassette. The protagonist, Commissioner Sabine Nemez, explains: “I love being asked - hunted …. My favorite hunter is the know-it-all, "to which the old lady replies:" Mine is the librarian. "Nemez then confirms:" Yes, that's good too. Actually, I love them all, ”and the professor agrees.
