occupation

The Hater (in Polish and Sala Samobójców. Hejter or short Hejter ) is a partially animated thriller from January Komasa , who came to the Polish theaters on March 6, 2020.

action

Tomek Giemza, a law student at the University of Warsaw who comes from a precarious background, is expelled from the law school because he was exposed as a plagiarist . He hides this from the Krasucki family, wealthy intellectuals who support him financially and without whose donations he can neither study nor finance his living expenses. The Krasuckis' daughter Gabi is a childhood friend and Tomek is in love with her.

After Tomek lost the support of the Krasuckis, he works for a PR agency that discredits celebrities and politicians for a fee and sows suspicion against LGBT communities or incites refugees on social media . He uses the latest technology to gain access to secret information about the capital's elite and is involved in spreading misinformation about politicians. Tomek proves to be extraordinarily adept at manipulating information and quickly wins the appreciation of his superiors Beata. When Paweł Rudnicki applies for the post of mayor who, with the help of young volunteers, tries to win new voters through social media, Tomek Giemza also slandered him.

production

Directed by Jan Komasa . In his upcoming cyber thriller “Suicide Room” he worked on the same topic as an animated film . Like Komasa's last film Corpus Christi, the script was written by Mateusz Pacewicz . The Hater was produced by Naima Film and co-produced by Polish commercial broadcaster TVN, Canal + Poland, dFlights and Coloroffon. The title refers to cyber bullying and the related hate comments on the Internet.

Compared to the Gazeta Prawna said Komasa to the question of where the idea had come into the room Suicide return and not to create a separate film, without referring to this story terms, Jurek Kapuściński, the producer of Suicide Room asked him in 2016, the thoughts contained in this film, since “paid hatred” on the Internet was already a “business model” at the time. Hejter is not the second part of Suicide Room , but moves in the same universe with similar mechanics of the world, according to Komasa.

Michal Jacaszek composed the film music.

publication

The film was released in Polish cinemas on March 6, 2020 and should celebrate its international premiere in mid-April 2020 as part of the Tribeca Film Festival . However, due to the coronavirus pandemic, the festival was canceled and postponed to a previously unknown date. After the opening weekend in Poland with around 148,000 visitors, the film was also taken out of cinemas due to the coronavirus pandemic and has only been available online since March 18, 2020. The distributor in Poland is Kino Świat. In May 2020, Netflix secured the worldwide rights to the film.

Reviews

Krzysztof Połaski from Telemagazyn notes in his film review that “Hejt” is a very topical issue. In the social media, many internet users apparently felt the need to insult other people. “In fact, it only takes a few clicks to harm someone's life,” says Połaski.

Compared to the character of Daniel in the film Corpus Christi , Tomek Giemza in Hejter is a very nice, helpful and socially committed person. In both films, Komasa is about showing how a group influences an individual and how people who are caught in the field of bullying suddenly become someone to be afraid of. Tomasz Zacharczuk from the online magazine trojmiasto.pl writes that Jan Komasa draws in Sala samobójców. Hejter, together with screenwriter Mateusz Pacewicz, created a precise portrait of a young man from the provinces who, driven by the obsession with social advancement, stops at nothing to improve his social position. He fights in vain for the recognition of an intellectual couple, the rejection of which provokes in him the desire for revenge, which in him triggers the process of demoralization. Tomek's metamorphosis is extremely frightening, and comparisons with Joker are therefore not unfounded, according to Zacharczuk.

In her review in the online cinema magazine Cineuropa , Ola Salwa notes that the hatred in Komasa's film is not only stoked online, but that social inequality is also proving to be a breeding ground for hatred: “Rich children like Gabi and her friends speak English and their mother tongue is Polish . They can pack their bags to study in London or the US with a snap of their parents' fingers, while others like Tomek need "mercy" to get started. "This leads to frustration, envy and suspicion and ultimately hatred, so Salwa.

Possible use in class

The online portal kinofenster.de recommends the film from the 10th grade for the subjects German , ethics / religion, art and social / community studies and offers teaching materials for the film. There Stefan Stiletto writes that although The Hater restricts itself to the negative side of social networks , it is thematically highly topical. In addition, the film succeeds in drawing the link between the digital and real world and making visible the actual consequences of acting in virtual space. It offers an opportunity, for example in the context of German or social studies lessons, to address the consequences of fake news and, associated with this, the question of how the truthfulness of information from the Internet can be checked at all. The possibilities of manipulation and surveillance via social networks could also be discussed, especially in the context of radicalization tendencies, hate speech and so-called filter bubbles .

The murder of Paweł Adamowicz

On January 14, 2019, just a few days after the filming of Hejter was finished , the mayor of Gdańsk Paweł Adamowicz was murdered. The parallels between this case and that of the mayoral candidate Pawel Rudnicki in the film have repeatedly been described by critics as frightening.
