The Holmes Brothers were an American band that mixed blues , gospel , soul , R&B, rock and roll and country in their music .

Biographical data

The band consisted of the brothers Sherman (born September 29, 1939 in Plainfield , New Jersey ) and Wendell (born December 19, 1943 in Plainfield, New Jersey, † June 19, 2015 ) Holmes and Popsy Dixon (born July 26, 1942 in Norfolk, Virginia; † January 9, 2015 ). The brothers' musical interest was aroused by their parents, who introduced them to gospel, but also to the blues of Jimmy Reed , Junior Parker and BB King . Sherman learned the clarinet and piano before starting bass, and Wendell learned the trumpet and guitar. The brothers gained musical experience in a band that often accompanied blues and soul acts. In 1979 the brothers founded "The Holmes Brothers", together with the drummer Popsy Dixon.

These three formed the heart of the band, and they occasionally join forces with other musicians for tours. Her three-part harmony singing delighted her fans again and again. Wendell's rough singing with Dixon's falsetto and Sherman's baritone brought the spirit of gospel music to every song they played.

Although they had been performing together in Harlem for years, they didn't become popular until the late 1980s. In 1992 they signed with Peter Gabriels Real World Records as the first American group of the famous world music label. From then on, their careers took off, performing with Bob Dylan , Van Morrison , Bruce Springsteen , Patti Smith , Willie Nelson , Lou Reed , Peter Gabriel , Merle Haggard , Keith Richards , Al Green , Ben Harper, Lucinda Williams , Steve Earle, Levon Helm , Rosanne Cash , Odetta and others on or recorded albums with them. In 1996 they appeared in the film Lotto Land , for which they also wrote the soundtrack. Between 2007 and the release of her last album, Wendell Holmes struggled with cancer, but he defeated it. On January 9, 2015, drummer Popsy Dixon died of cancer at the age of 72. On June 19, Wendell Holmes died of a lung disease.
